According to Wccftech , there are now multiple reliable sources confirming that Steam is planning to release the Deckard VR headset in late 2025. This is a standalone, wireless VR device and has an expected selling price of $ 1,200 for the entire product package, including some games or demos included.
Valve's Deckard VR headset is said to be standalone, allowing for PC-free gaming, but its high price tag could be a major hurdle.
Deckard will use the SteamOS operating system, which was developed for the Steam Deck, but will be customized for virtual reality. A key feature of the device is the ability to play flat-screen Steam Deck games in VR on a large screen without connecting to a PC. This promises to bring a more diverse experience to users, not just limited to traditional virtual reality games.
Previous leaks have also revealed Deckard's new controller, codenamed Roy, which was featured in a SteamVR update, and Valve may soon hold internal demonstrations of the device.
Valve has previously mentioned developing a new VR headset by the end of 2022. At the time, product designer Greg Coomer said the company was still investing in virtual reality technology and wanted to keep the platform open instead of being exclusive to a certain ecosystem.
Deckard will be the follow-up to Valve Index, a VR headset launched in 2019. The Index was highly praised for its technology and came bundled with the game Half-Life: Alyx , but sales were limited due to its high price. At the time, Valve founder Gabe Newell mentioned working on a wireless VR headset, and Deckard seems to be a step in that direction.
Deckard's price tag is roughly the same as the Valve Index when adjusted for inflation, suggesting that Valve is still targeting the high-end rather than the mass market. The standalone nature of the device could help expand its usability, but the high price tag could make it less accessible to the masses. Valve has not confirmed anything about Deckard at this time, and internal demonstrations may be taking place before an official announcement.
