Although it has appeared on the Thai market for a few years, this is the first time that Bac Giang lychee has been officially exported by a Vietnamese enterprise and brought to a large supermarket system in Thailand.

This batch of Bac Giang lychees exported will be sold at Gourmet Market supermarkets located in 7 large shopping centers of The Mall Group. These are leading supermarkets specializing in selling food, foodstuffs and household goods in Thailand.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Viet, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of VIFOCO, said that in May 2023, with the support of the Vietnam Trade Office in Thailand, the Company approached a number of Thai retailers to discuss exporting the company's products to this market. After many efforts, the Company and its partners have completed the necessary procedures to bring the first batch of goods to Thai consumers.

Mr. Viet shared: “We are very pleased to be one of the pioneering enterprises to bring fresh lychees to Thai consumers. And especially, Bac Giang lychees are now available on the shelves of The Mall shopping mall chain, one of the largest retailers in Thailand today.”

At Siam Paragon shopping mall, many customers were very excited when they tasted Vietnamese lychees. Mr. Thitikorn, a customer from Bangkok commented: “I find that Vietnamese lychees have a slightly different color than Thai and Chinese lychees, but the flesh is thicker, more juicy and sweeter. The price is also reasonable. So I think Vietnamese lychees will be popular with Thai people.”

Meanwhile, Mrs. Somsri Somta happily showed off to reporters the box of fresh lychees she had just bought. She said that all three of her children had just tried and really liked Vietnamese lychees. She said that Vietnamese lychees have thin skin, thick flesh, are delicious, sweet and juicy, and the seeds are easy to separate.

Mr. Somkiat Wongsakulchai, CEO of Ekthai Company, a distributor in Thailand, also highly appreciated the quality of Vietnamese lychees: “Vietnamese lychees are more delicious than those from some other countries. The lychees have beautiful colors, small seeds, juicy flesh, and are very fragrant and sweet. This is the first time we have sold Vietnamese lychees at 7 stores in Bangkok of Mall Group and will expand to all branches next year. I think Thai consumers will be very interested in Vietnamese lychees.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Viet, importing countries always have “technical barriers” to protect agricultural products in their countries. Therefore, the government and businesses in Bac Giang province are prepared and have committed to building separate growing area codes for exporting Bac Giang lychees. He shared: “I really hope that Bac Giang businesses as well as Vietnamese businesses will make efforts to produce many products from lychees to export to the Thai market.”

With positive feedback from Thai partners and consumers, Mr. Viet expressed hope that next year his company will be able to export from 1,000 to 2,000 tons of fresh lychee to Thailand.

In an interview with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy, representative of the Vietnam Trade Office in Thailand, affirmed that Thailand is a potential market for Vietnamese lychees. He said: "The contribution of businesses as well as the support of state agencies play a very important role in guiding and helping Vietnamese lychees reach the Thai market. Although Thailand is considered the fruit capital of the region, there is still much potential and room to explore."

Bac Giang lychees are displayed in eye-catching positions in shopping malls.

This year, in addition to market-related issues, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Thailand also focuses on seasonal factors. At this time, when the output of lychees imported from Thailand and China to Thailand has decreased, it is a great opportunity to bring Vietnamese lychees to the Thai market. Mr. Huy suggested that in the coming years, in addition to the necessary factors such as product quality, export enterprises should also pay attention to seasonal factors. This will be the key to help Vietnamese enterprises penetrate the Thai market, not only lychees but also many other agricultural products.

Mr. Huy also said that Thailand currently only grants import licenses for 4 types of fruit from Vietnam. However, the market size of these 4 types of fruit does not stop at fresh products but also includes processed products. Vietnam's food industry is growing rapidly and that will be the driving force for Vietnam's processed products to appear more and more in the Thai market in particular and the world in general.
