There was a time when the trend of marrying Taiwanese men was popular, leading to many consequences. The sad fates of Vietnamese brides were of interest to many people. In the movie Wish We Could Fly Together, there was such a fate.
Messy weddings in Vietnamese movies
Mr. Hop (actor Ha Phong) and Mrs. Nga (Kieu Trinh) live in a boarding house. They have three children. Ngan - the eldest daughter in the family is beautiful, and is the most beloved by Mr. Hop. The other two children, Nhi (Trinh Thao) and Hoan (Vo Dien Gia Huy), are like a thorn in his side.

Being poor, lazy and vain made Mr. Hop always want to marry Ngan to Taiwanese president Wang, so that his children and family could have a happy life.
Mrs. Nga loves her son, but she is weak and afraid of her husband. She also follows her husband's lead in letting her son marry a Taiwanese man, because she simply thinks that if her son marries a rich man, it will be less miserable.
Every day passed with Ngan smoldering with frustration waiting to explode.

The first outbreak was probably the way Ngan protested, deciding to break off her engagement to the Taiwanese man. Ngan loved Hoang - the gentle neighbor boy.
She wanted to live with him so she played all kinds of tricks. Ngan lied to Mr. Wang that she lost her virginity. She asked Hoang to tell her grandmother to come to her family to ask for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately, the love was one-sided because Hoang did not love Ngan.
The incident continued to flare up at Ngan's wedding. When she failed to achieve her goal and learned that her father sold her for 500 million, Ngan accepted the arranged marriage.
Her wedding can be considered the most chaotic wedding in Vietnamese movies. When the Taiwanese man came to the wedding party, he was beaten up. The party turned into a brawl because of the neighbor's words: "That much gold is not worth it for you to sell your daughter!".

Young faces in Wish We Could Fly Together
The pace of the movie Wish We Could Fly Together is quite slow. Japanese actor Shohei Yamada plays the Taiwanese president, his acting is stiff, and his voice is a bit hard to understand.
In return, the plus point is that the setting in the film is quite beautiful. The small village road has rows of tall rubber trees. Wooden houses and vegetable gardens are built, a new and rare thing in Vietnamese films. Occasionally, a dove appears on the small screen, making it look even more poetic.
Acting for the first time, playing the main role, Thuy Dung was able to portray Ngan - a beautiful and calculating girl.
Ngan is smart and knows how to resolve what she did to the Taiwanese man in the past peacefully.

Thuy Dung shared that she understood that all the favors that Ngan's father gave her were just expectations and impositions. Ngan could not live as she truly wanted, so she began to feel jealous and envious. The scheming and calculating gradually pushed Ngan away.
Along with Thuy Dung, the young actors create a new look for the film.
Taking on the role of "The stupid, greasy-limbed neighborhood youths" (Mr. Hop's words) are tall, handsome actors with bright faces.
Hoang, played by Quang Dai, is as gentle as a piece of dirt, speaks softly, and behaves moderately. Hoang looks at Nhi affectionately, understanding who his heart is for.
Lanh Thanh plays the role of mechanic Tuan who also has a secret crush on Nhi. He is kind and sometimes quite carefree.
In recent episodes, the film focuses on the interesting relationship between director Chao (Le Hai) and Nhi. Every time this guy smiles, his charming dimples appear, making viewers feel regretful and guess: "Because he's the supporting male character, it's probably hard for them to be together."
Wish We Could Fly Together was written by Nguyen Khac Ngan Vi and directed by Phan Dang Di.
It took three years after filming began, with many pauses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the film to reach audiences. Therefore, the topic of Vietnamese brides marrying Taiwanese men is probably no longer so hot.
The journey of the boys and girls in the poor neighborhood with their stumbles, failures, and mistakes is the connecting factor for the audience to follow the film.
