Research shows that 1 in 20 women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer , and 1 in 70 are at risk of dying from the disease.

"Although breast cancer is the most common cancer in women globally, the burden of the disease is not evenly distributed," the study said. "The highest incidence rates are recorded in Australia and New Zealand."

The National Breast Cancer Foundation says 1 in 7 Australian women and 1 in 556 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

An average of 58 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Research also shows that New Zealanders account for a high proportion of those diagnosed with the disease.

“Female breast cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand,” said Dr Jason Gurney, an epidemiologist at the University of Otago. “New Zealand women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, either through the national screening programme or when patients present to their health care providers with symptoms such as a suspicious lump.”

The high rates of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia and New Zealand could be due to a number of factors, said study co-author Nehmat Houssami, professor of public health at the University of Sydney.

“The reasons are related to population structure, such as aging and risk factors,” she said. “Breast cancer risk factors that women may be less aware of include alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and postmenopausal obesity.”
