What will the traffic route through Da Nang airport and Han River tunnel be like?

The Department of Construction of Da Nang City has just reported on the plan to build an East-West traffic connection route through Da Nang airport and the Han River tunnel.


On March 19, the Department of Construction of Da Nang City has just issued a report proposing a plan to build an East-West traffic connection route through Da Nang airport and a tunnel project under the Han River.

Accordingly, the East-West traffic connection project through Da Nang airport proposed a tunnel with a length of more than 2.9km.

Of which, two open tunnel sections have a total length of 570m, three box tunnel sections have a total length of 1,450m and the tunnel over the existing runway is 900m.

The Department of Construction of Da Nang City also proposed two options: MRT line going with the road and MRT line not going with the road.

According to analysis, the MRT route option combined with the road has high technical difficulty, costs about 10,000 billion VND, average safety/operation level, and is difficult to expand the MRT.

The MRT route option that does not share a road has lower technical difficulty, costs about 7,500 billion VND, has high safety/operational level, and is easy to expand the MRT.

Da Nang Department of Construction recommends that for the tunnel route through the airport, the MRT route and the road should not be combined.

The reason is that the technical standards of MRT and road are different. The characteristics of the plane and longitudinal profile of MRT and road at the airport tunnel location are too different, making it difficult to handle the structure at the junction between MRT and road.

According to this Department, the investment progress of the MRT line has not yet been determined, so with rapid changes in technology, determining the route and technology will be selected at the time of investment.

However, with the actual conditions of Da Nang airport being planned for expansion, the MRT route option also needs to be studied soon.

For the Han River tunnel project, the total length of the main tunnel is about 1.67km; including a 600m closed tunnel across the river, a 380m closed tunnel on the bank and a 415m open tunnel.

The starting point of the tunnel connects with Dong Da Street (Hai Chau District), the end point connects with Van Don Street (Son Tra District).

According to the report, the total investment of the project is expected to be 6,880 billion VND. Of which, construction costs account for 3,900 billion VND, costs for site clearance and resettlement support for 2,000 billion VND and some other costs.
