Joint Statement of ASEAN Senior Leaders on the Passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong

We are deeply saddened to receive the news that His Excellency Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, passed away on July 19, 2024.

At this time of grief and mourning, we would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the Government and the People of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s leadership and lifelong dedication to the people and country of Vietnam will always be remembered. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s contributions to regional and international peace, friendship and cooperation will be an invaluable and lasting legacy.

Also on July 24, 2024, at the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty Commission (SEANWFZ) Meeting, the first activity within the framework of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings, ASEAN Foreign Ministers observed a minute of silence to express their deep condolences over the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, a leader who made many important contributions to peace, friendship and cooperation in the region and the world.
