Billion-dollar schools 'shelved'

Tra Don Secondary School (Tra Don Commune, Nam Tra My District, Quang Nam) was invested in construction in 2021 with a scale of 13 rooms. Of which, there are 10 classrooms and 3 subject rooms. This project is invested by the Management Board of Construction Investment Projects of Nam Tra My District, with a budget of nearly 8 billion VND. In early 2023, the project was completed but has not been put into operation since then due to the fire prevention and fighting regulations recently issued by the Ministry of Construction.

Tra Don Secondary School "covered" because it does not meet new fire prevention regulations

Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Ba, Principal of Tra Don Secondary School, said that because the classrooms were built too long ago and are now degraded, they had to be demolished to build a new school. Last school year, the school had 7 classes and 228 students in 4 grades.

"The reason the new school cannot be put into use is due to the fire prevention regulations recently issued by the Ministry of Construction. We are only the beneficiary. Because it is not guaranteed, we cannot sign to receive the school and the investor cannot hand it over to us for management and use," said Mr. Ba.

Mr. Le Trung Thuc, Chairman of Tra Don Commune People's Committee, said that facing the risk of Tra Don Secondary School being put into use late, the commune has proposed the District People's Committee and the District Construction Investment Project Management Board to speed up the implementation of regulations to meet fire prevention and fighting requirements.

A leader of Nam Tra My District People's Committee said that the district is reviewing to supplement the new fire prevention and fighting regulations. For Tra Don Secondary School, an additional VND 1 billion will be allocated from the district budget to build in accordance with the new fire prevention and fighting regulations. It is expected that at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, students will be able to attend the new school.
