The military exercise “Peaceful Unification-2024” officially began on July 29 and is expected to last until mid-August.
Previously, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) conducted battlefield surveys and set up command posts to prepare for this joint exercise.
The trilateral anti-terrorism exercise with Tanzania and Mozambique comes as Beijing steps up its military diplomacy with African countries.
Before the start of the exercise, several tactical trainings using armored fighting vehicles and self-propelled assault guns were held at the Tanzanian army's China-built comprehensive training center in Mapinga, Bagamoyo district.
Beijing has sent infantry units from the PLA Central Theater Command as well as a fleet of warships from the Southern Theater Command to participate in the East Africa exercise.
Observers say the joint exercise will bring many benefits to China and participating African countries, not only in military training but also in strengthening political relations.
The exercise will include counterterrorism operations on land and at sea, boarding and seizure, anti-piracy patrols and joint maritime patrols, said Paul Nantulya, a China expert at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington.
