The meeting took place at the request of Iran and was supported by Russia, China and Algeria.

Addressing the ambassadors attending the session, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo reaffirmed the need to cool regional tensions, urging the UN's most powerful body to "take swift and effective diplomatic action".

According to her, the attacks that have occurred in the past few days show a rapid and dangerous escalation, in the context of the ongoing fighting in Gaza, which has killed over 38,000 Palestinians, injured more than 88,000 others and left about 90% of the strip's population homeless.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General stressed the need to immediately launch diplomatic efforts and find a path to bring peace and stability to the Middle East region.

UN Security Council members also affirmed the urgency of de-escalating the situation, achieving a ceasefire and deploying diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating throughout the region.

The Security Council again noted the impact of fighting on civilians, in particular women, children, humanitarian workers and journalists.

Earlier the same day, spokesman Stéphane Dujarric of UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the head of the world's largest multilateral organization assessed that "the attacks in South Beirut (Lebanon) and Tehran (Iran) represent a dangerous escalation.

According to him, this is the time when all efforts should be directed towards a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, increased humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza and the restoration of stability in Lebanon and across the Green Line (the line of control).

Mr. Dujarric added that UN Secretary-General Guterres has repeatedly called on all parties to show maximum restraint, but at this extremely sensitive time, restraint alone is not enough.

The international community needs to act strongly and urgently to de-escalate the conflict, prevent any moves that risk pushing the entire Middle East to the brink of war, and move towards lasting peace and stability for all.

Meanwhile, top UN officials in charge of Middle East issues also made efforts to cool down regional tensions.

On July 31, UN Special Envoy for the Middle East Tor Wennesland expressed deep concern over new developments that could have far-reaching impacts on the entire region.

On social network X, Mr. Tor Wennesland urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid steps that could further destabilize.

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert reiterated that there is no military solution to the current crisis, and called on both Israel and Lebanon to utilize all diplomatic channels to avoid hostilities.

The UNSC meeting and the call from the UN Secretary-General took place in the context of serious escalation of tensions in the Middle East, from the Israeli attack on the outskirts of the capital Beirut that left nearly 70 people dead or injured on the night of July 30 to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital Tehran early on the morning of July 31.
