Ahead of the second 'Children's Parliament' Mock Session in 2024, a special event called Girls Takeover - Empowering Girls, was held with the participation of 33 child delegates from 5 provinces: Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Kon Tum.

Girls Takeover is Plan International's global initiative to promote gender equality and empower girls and young people to take on leadership positions.

Since its launch in 2016, the campaign has created thousands of events around the world where girls not only demonstrate their leadership potential but also have a voice in shaping the future.

In Vietnam, the Girls Takeover series of activities has taken place for many years and has always attracted strong attention from the community and the media.

More than just temporarily empowering girls to take on important roles, the Girls Takeover initiative is also a symbolic move to promote their stronger participation in social issues, especially children's rights and gender equality.

By giving girls the opportunity to experience leadership positions in organizations and businesses, Plan International hopes to change society's perception of the role of women in all fields.

This year, Girls Takeover took the form of a mock meeting of the Plan International Vietnam Board of Directors, including the Country Director and other key positions.

Six girls were selected to play the role of senior members of the organization and participate in discussions and share opinions with the Board of Directors.

Participating in the mock meeting, the empowered girls raised many practical and profound questions for Plan International Vietnam's leadership and delegates to discuss.

Vo Thi Phuong Chi - Vice President of Konray District Youth Council, Kon Tum Province, who took on the role of Human Resources and Development Manager, asked the question "How can young people participating in Plan project activities have the opportunity to become Plan staff in the future?".

In addition, the topic of what Plan should do to ensure that the needs of children and young people are reflected in the design of projects was also of interest and hotly discussed.

This is not only an opportunity for children to experience leadership roles, but also creates conditions for them to discuss important issues such as the participation of children and youth in programs, and to propose solutions to promote children's rights in projects.

The questions they will ask revolve around how to give children the opportunity to become employees, participate in the design and evaluation of projects, and ensure children's right to feedback in development programmes.

At the end of the event, delegates signed a sign with the message: "Plan International Vietnam is committed to empowering children and young people, especially girls, in their journey to create change."

Sharing with TG&VN, Ms. Migena Shulla, Country Director of Plan International, said she was impressed by the confidence, awareness and intelligence of Vietnamese children when participating in the empowerment event.

“The questions and solutions that the children came up with were amazing. The event not only helped the children, but also inspired leaders like us to continue creating playgrounds and opportunities for them to express their voices,” emphasized Ms. Migena Shulla.

Through this event, Plan International Vietnam continues to affirm its commitment to continuously promote children's rights and gender equality in Vietnam. This is one of the practical steps the community takes to support girls in developing their skills and affirming their position and role in society.
