From 2026 to 2030, Ho Chi Minh City will spend 4,000 billion VND to expand Cau Ngang canal, Thu Duc canal and upgrade Duong Van Cam street to prevent flooding in Thu Duc market area.

The above information was recorded from the seminar on Current situation and solutions to reduce flooding in Thu Duc City held on May 31.

According to the report of Thu Duc City People's Committee, there are currently 24 flooded areas in the area. Of these, there are 3 areas with severe flooding, which the City needs to focus on solving immediately.

Specifically, Thao Dien ward area includes 3 flooded spots: Thao Dien, Quoc Huong and Tran Ngoc Dien streets.

Hiep Phu - Tang Nhon Phu A ward area includes 2 flooded areas: Le Van Viet street (from Phong Phu communal house to La Xuan Oai) and La Xuan Oai street (from Le Van Viet to street 102).

Linh Tay and Truong Tho wards (Thu Duc Market area) include 3 flooded spots: Duong Van Cam, Dang Thi Ranh, and Kha Van Can streets.

Of these three areas, Thu Duc market area was the most heavily flooded even though the drainage system had just been inaugurated more than a month earlier.

Proposing a solution to prevent flooding in the Thu Duc market area, Associate Professor Dr. Le Song Giang, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that the urgent measure to prevent flooding in this area is for Thu Duc City to find ways to limit water from other areas flowing into Thu Duc market and renovate Cau Ngang canal and Thu Duc canal to quickly drain into the Saigon River.

According to Mr. Giang, the traffic planning of this area is pushing water to Thu Duc market, and Cau Ngang canal is limiting drainage, leading to severe flooding.

"I think it is completely feasible to find a way to divide water from Vo Van Ngan and Kha Van Can streets... so that it does not flow all the way to Thu Duc market. This method must be combined with a number of other solutions and cannot be done separately," Mr. Giang suggested.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Chau Nguyen Xuan Quang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Environment and Resources - Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that it is necessary to re-plan the city to prevent flooding, because the 752/QD-TTg plan of Ho Chi Minh City is old and needs to be changed.

“If Thu Duc City does not find a way to deal with the flooding now, it will become more serious. The water level of rivers and canals in the area has increased recently as we have built embankments, and the situation of subsidence and increased concreting is also very concerning.”

Proposing a solution to prevent flooding in the Thu Duc market area, Mr. Quang said that it is necessary to dredge Cau Ngang canal and Thu Duc canal. Then, we can use pumps to pump water from Thu Duc market to Cau Ngang canal to reduce flooding.

Mr. Mai Huu Quyet, Vice Chairman of Thu Duc City People's Committee informed about investment in flood prevention in Thu Duc market area.

Receiving opinions from experts, Mr. Mai Huu Quyet, Vice Chairman of Thu Duc City People's Committee said that after the discussion, Thu Duc City units will take note and then make a comprehensive project of solutions to reduce flooding in the area.

Regarding the solution to reduce flooding in the Thu Duc market area, Mr. Quyet said that from 2026 to 2030, Ho Chi Minh City will spend 4,000 billion VND to expand Cau Ngang canal, Thu Duc canal and upgrade Duong Van Cam street. At the same time, research will be done to build a regulating lake in the Go Dua area.

Regarding the proposal to separate the water flow from Vo Van Ngan Street to other branches, not flowing to Thu Duc market, it will be considered for implementation. However, according to Mr. Quyet, in order to reduce flooding, besides investing in construction, Thu Duc City will encourage people not to litter and prevent tidal water levels... to prevent flooding.
