According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Presidential Palace on July 27, President To Lam, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, received US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who came to Vietnam to offer condolences and pay respects to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

At the reception, Secretary of State Blinken conveyed a letter of condolences from President Joe Biden to President To Lam on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

In the letter, President Biden recalled his memories and deep impressions of the first time he met the General Secretary in Washington DC in 2015.

He also expressed pride in standing with the General Secretary during his visit to Hanoi last year and together opening a new era of cooperation between the two countries.

President Biden emphasized: “That event is a testament to the common desire of our two peoples for peace and prosperity for all. It is also a testament to the General Secretary's determination to bring the two countries' relationship to the highest level, a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The United States will not forget the leadership of the General Secretary. The United States fully supports a strong, self-reliant, and independent Vietnam to which the General Secretary devoted his entire life.

As the great poet Nguyen Du wrote: “Heaven still allows us to have this day/The mist at the end of the lane clears the clouds in the sky”, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong plays an indispensable role in dispelling the clouds that have sometimes covered the relationship between the two countries over the past 50 years.

Let us honor the memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong by continuing his legacy and maintaining this important partnership.”

At the meeting, Secretary of State Blinken also expressed his condolences at the passing of a leader with strategic vision, and appreciated the General Secretary's contributions to strengthening and nurturing Vietnam-US relations as well as the friendship between the two peoples.

President To Lam conveyed his sincere thanks to President Biden for his kind sentiments and deep condolences on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

The President shared that during his lifetime, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong attached great importance to developing relations with the US and often mentioned President Biden with many good feelings. The General Secretary's historic visit to the US in 2015 created a strong driving force to help the two countries develop strongly and become the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as it is today.

Secretary of State Blinken affirmed that the US values ​​the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam and hopes that the two sides will cooperate closely to further deepen this important bilateral relationship.

He also believed that the two sides would continue to promote and nurture the Vietnam-US relationship to further develop and the friendship between the two peoples would be increasingly strengthened in accordance with the wishes of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

The US Secretary of State also shared that the General Secretary's passing is a great loss to the relationship between the two countries.

On this occasion, President To Lam and Secretary of State Blinken expressed their delight at the positive developments in the bilateral relationship in recent times in all areas.

President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam considers the US a partner of top strategic importance and welcomes the US's continued commitment to supporting a "strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous" Vietnam.

He wished to continue to closely coordinate to implement the commitments of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Biden to bring the new relationship framework into depth, effectiveness and stability.

On behalf of President Biden and the US administration, Secretary of State Blinken expressed his deep condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for this great loss.

Secretary of State Blinken shared that President Biden often recalls the historic visit to the US in 2015 by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, considering it an important milestone in bilateral relations.

On behalf of the Government and people of Vietnam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked Secretary of State Blinken for visiting and greeting the family of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on behalf of President Biden and the US government.

Through Secretary of State Blinken, the Prime Minister conveyed the sincere thanks of the Vietnamese Government as well as the Prime Minister himself to President Biden for the message of deep condolences on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that thanks to the strategic vision and wise leadership of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Biden, the relationship between the two countries has entered a new important stage of development.

Looking forward to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Secretary of State Blinken agreed that the two sides need to increase contact and exchanges at all levels, especially at high levels.

At the same time, focus on promoting economic - trade - investment cooperation, high technology, semiconductor cooperation, further promoting the potential for cooperation in the field of training high-quality human resources, considering this to continue to be the focus and driving force for bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh especially emphasized the need for the two sides to further strengthen cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war.

The Head of Government also shared that he had just had a working trip to a locality in Vietnam, meeting with Vietnamese veterans and their families on the occasion of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27), and witnessed with his own eyes many families, war invalids and martyrs who had to suffer the wounds of war that were left for future generations.

The Prime Minister asked the US to further speed up the clearance of remaining bombs, mines and explosives, dioxin detoxification at hotspots, and support people with disabilities affected by the consequences of war.

For his part, the Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam will continue to cooperate fully and effectively in the search for US soldiers missing in action (MIA).
