Today, January 15 (Vietnam time), top advisors to US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump put aside their differences to perform the 'passing of the baton' ceremony focusing on national security issues.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan (left) passes the baton to his successor Mike Waltz during a ceremony at the US Institute of Peace in Washington DC.
At a ceremony to revive the ritual held by the US Institute of Peace since 2001, Mr. Jake Sullivan, President Biden's national security adviser, handed the baton symbol of power to Congressman Mike Waltz, who was nominated for the position by President-elect Donald Trump.
It was a rare sighting between the two men, as both Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Waltz regularly appear before the press to defend their boss on Ukraine, China and the Middle East.
At the headquarters of the United States Institute of Peace, Waltz and Sullivan spoke gently to each other in a discussion designed to demonstrate the continuity of power in America.
The event is an act to ensure a peaceful transfer of power when Mr. Trump takes office on January 20.
At President Biden’s request, Mr. Sullivan updated Mr. Waltz on the current administration’s policies, even though Mr. Trump’s aides have said the new administration would take a completely different direction from the Biden administration.
Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Biden's special envoy Brett McGurk worked together this week to advance talks on a ceasefire and hostage release in the Gaza Strip.
As for the challenges facing the next administration, both Mr. Waltz and Mr. Sullivan cited the wildfires in California and China.
While Mr. Sullivan mentioned artificial intelligence as another challenge, Mr. Waltz said the situation on the US-Mexico border was a priority.
However, Mr. Waltz also recognized the Biden administration's success in deepening relations between the US and its allies and partners in Europe.
