During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on November 16, US President Joe Biden said that competition between the two countries should not lead to conflict.
Speaking to the Chinese leader on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, Peru, believed to be their last meeting before Donald Trump returns to the White House, President Biden stressed: "Our two countries cannot let any competition become conflict. That is our responsibility and over the past four years, I think we have demonstrated that we can maintain this relationship."
Meanwhile, Mr. Xi Jinping said that China will "strive for a smooth transition" in relations with the US, stressing that the two countries should "continue to seek the right way" to maintain relations and "achieve long-term peaceful coexistence".
The meeting between the leaders of the world's two largest economies comes two months before Mr Trump takes office in January next year amid concerns about new trade wars and diplomatic upheaval.
During his first term in the White House, Mr. Trump engaged in a fierce trade war with China, imposing tariffs on billions of dollars worth of imports from the Northeast Asian nation and facing retaliation from Beijing.
He maintained the same stance in this year's election campaign.
Present at the talks on the US side were Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, along with other officials.
The Chinese delegation included Politburo Standing Committee member, Secretary of the Secretariat, Director of the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Cai Qi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao.
