Find the winner of the $1.2 billion jackpot

A woman has become a millionaire after winning the $1.2 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot sold in California (USA).

The California Lottery announced on March 17 that Rosemary Casarotti, a resident of Shasta County, California, was the sole winner of the $1.2 billion jackpot. Casarotti declined to attend a press conference or appear before the media, adding that she "wanted to keep the information as private as possible."

Casarotti bought the ticket at a Circle K store in Shasta County and matched the winning numbers in the drawing on Dec. 27, 2024. She chose to receive a lump sum of $571 million rather than receive it in installments over several decades, which would have totaled nearly $1.2 billion. The Circle K store that sold the winning ticket also received a $1 million commission, according to the New York Post .

“It’s great to know that our store played a part in making lottery history,” said Circle K store owner Ishar Gill. Gill said ticket sales at the store have increased since the winning ticket was announced in December.

“We extend our sincerest congratulations to Rosemary on her historic win and our gratitude for her contribution to supporting the California Lottery’s mission to provide additional funding for public education in our state,” California Lottery Director Harjinder Shergill Chima said in a press release.

This is the fifth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. The prize has increased after no one has won in the previous 30 drawings. The odds of winning are slim, with the probability of buying a Mega Millions ticket with all the correct numbers being 1 in 300 million.

According to USA Today , players can choose 6 numbers from 2 different combinations: 5 numbers from 1-70 and 1 number from 1-25. Lottery tickets can be purchased up to 15 minutes before the drawing time.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot in US history came from a single ticket, winning $1.58 billion in the drawing on the night of August 8, 2023.
