On October 24, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared that it was impossible to invite Kiev to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at this time, while his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban said that the West was losing in Ukraine.

In an interview with German television station ZDF, the German Chancellor rejected the request to join NATO that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made in his plan to end the conflict, saying that it is important to realize that countries in conflict cannot become members of NATO.
He noted there was no controversy surrounding the issue.
Noting that NATO leaders had mentioned Ukraine's membership in the distant future at the 2023-2024 summits, the leader said that there was no need to make any new decisions at the moment.
In the interview, Chancellor Scholz also reaffirmed his stance that the Russia-Ukraine conflict cannot be allowed to escalate into a direct conflict between NATO and Russia, and reiterated his opposition to the supply of Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Kiev.
Recently, President Zelensky has increased pressure, urging Western allies to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, and announced a Plan to End the Conflict, with one of the core proposals being that Kiev must "be invited to join NATO immediately".
The Ukrainian president has also called for lifting restrictions on long-range weapons provided by the West, but so far none of these requests have received consensus from NATO.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also "poured cold water" on the efforts of Ukraine and its Western allies in the conflict with Russia by declaring that Western countries " find themselves in a difficult position, fighting a lost war" .
Speaking on Kossuth radio, the leader, who has had many problems with other member states of the European Union (EU), commented: " The situation is that Western countries do not want to stop the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and therefore the logical question is whether Hungary has room to maneuver."
Hungary has no intention of being drawn into these actions despite pressure, and its principled stance has allowed it to maintain “room to maneuver” in its economy, which has been hit hard by the conflict in Ukraine and continues to buy Russian oil and gas, Mr Orban said.
Placing his hopes on former US President Donald Trump's return to the White House, Prime Minister Orban said that this could pave the way for a solution to the conflict in Ukraine "and then we will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, because we will no longer be alone; at least there will be two of us".
