At the invitation of the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Chair of the Group of 20 major developed and emerging economies (G20) in 2024, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his wife, President of the Dominican Republic Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona and his wife, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, attended the G20 Summit, conducted a number of bilateral activities in Brazil and paid an official visit to the Dominican Republic. This is the fifth time Vietnam has been a guest at the G20 Summit, and the first time a high-ranking Vietnamese leader has visited the Dominican Republic.
This year's G20 Summit takes place in the context of the world's political, security and economic situation continuing to have many complex and unpredictable fluctuations, deeply and multi-faceted impacts on the global security and development environment. Conflict hotspots are complicated, prolonged and have no solutions. The world economy maintains its recovery and improvement momentum, but the pace is slow and uneven. Countries proactively implement new development policies and strategies, focusing on ensuring economic security, unleashing internal strength, and promoting economic diversification and transformation.
With the participation of the world's major economies, the G20 continues to be considered an influential mechanism, contributing to shaping standards and rules of the game on a global scale. Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the theme "Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet", the 19th G20 Summit prioritized discussions on poverty reduction, inclusive and sustainable development, energy transition and reform of the global governance system.
Along with other G20 members, Vietnam is one of the guest countries attending the Summit in Brazil. Vietnam has attended the G20 Summit four times as a guest and as ASEAN Chair and APEC host. In its role as G20 Chair in 2024, Brazil is promoting many important initiatives, inviting Vietnam to join the Call to Action on Global Governance Reform and the Global Alliance to Fight Poverty.
Relations between Vietnam and the Dominican Republic have developed positively since the two countries established diplomatic relations in July 2005. The two sides maintain delegation exchanges and implement a political consultation mechanism between the two foreign ministries. Economic and trade cooperation tends to increase. The Dominican Republic is interested in cooperating with Vietnam in the fields of telecommunications, energy, oil and gas, and construction materials production. The two sides maintain coordination and mutual support at multilateral mechanisms and international organizations, such as the United Nations and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's working trip to attend the G20 Summit, conduct bilateral activities in Brazil and pay an official visit to the Dominican Republic continues to affirm and implement the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress and the Secretariat's Directive on promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy. Vietnam's participation in the G20 Summit, as a guest country, not as the chair of any regional forum or organization, shows that the international community and Brazil highly appreciate the role of the Vietnamese economy in the world economy, and attach importance to Vietnam's position and contributions at multilateral forums and in joint efforts to address global challenges. By attending the G20 Summit, Vietnam continues to affirm its stance on promoting multilateralism and international solidarity; affirming the role of the G20 in addressing global issues, promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's bilateral activities in Rio de Janeiro coincided with the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, contributing to bringing the Vietnam-Brazil Comprehensive Partnership to a new stage of development.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to the Dominican Republic is of historic significance to the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. Towards the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, the visit contributes to consolidating the foundation of friendship, political trust and enhancing cooperation between the two countries in a more practical and effective manner.
Wishing the working trip of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife along with the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to attend the G20 Summit, conduct bilateral activities in Brazil and pay an official visit to the Dominican Republic a great success, conveying to the international community an important message about Vietnam as dynamic, innovative, responsible and ready to shoulder and share common work, contributing to the goal of building a fair world and a sustainable planet.
