Sam Altman has returned to his position as CEO of OpenAI after a tumultuous few days at the company. He is one of many tech leaders obsessed with prolonging their lives. He is also said to have prepared for worst-case scenarios like a deadly virus outbreak, nuclear war, AI attacks, etc. with an arsenal of guns, gold, and survival supplies. Whether it is eating, working, or sleeping, he is particularly concerned with the daily aspects and maximizing efficiency.

Below is the daily schedule as revealed by Altman himself.

Morning

Altman drinks a large espresso first thing in the morning, but rarely eats breakfast. He says he typically fasts for 15 hours a day. When he reads emails, he uses a full-spectrum LED light for 10 to 15 minutes. He also avoids early morning meetings, which he says are when he works best.

During the day

Altman typically prefers afternoon meetings and finds 15- to 20-minute or two-hour meetings most effective. The OpenAI CEO thinks the one-hour default is a waste of time, so he avoids them as much as possible.

Altman seems to have a low opinion of meetings, saying that “90% of random meetings are a waste of time, although the other 10% actually make up for it.” He prefers to spend his free time meeting and interacting with new people and ideas, and thinking about what to do next.

He often makes to-do lists and prefers to take notes on paper rather than on a computer. On his blog, the 38-year-old leader said it helps him keep track of what he wants to accomplish in a year, a month, or a day. Lists help him focus and multitask because he doesn’t have to keep so many things in his head. “If I’m not in the mood to do something, I always find something else appealing to do.”

He also had an espresso after lunch.

Evening

Despite his caffeine intake, sleep is one of the most important things for Altman to be productive. He avoids eating too much before bed and doesn't drink alcohol.

Since childhood, he has been a vegetarian, drinking nutritional drinks to supplement his diet, although he hates them. He also avoids foods that are bad for his stomach, such as super spicy, hard to digest, and too much sugar. However, he has trouble resisting sweets.

Quarterly blood tests will help him know what vitamins to supplement. Sam Altman is said to have taken the diabetes drug metformin to slow aging.

When it comes to sleep, the OpenAI CEO uses a sleep tracker and prefers a cool, dark, quiet room with a soft mattress. If that’s not cold enough, he uses a cooling pad and often takes a sleeping pill to help him sleep more deeply.

Exercise

Altman likes to lift heavy weights three times a week for about an hour and sometimes do high-intensity interval training. Training helps him get in top shape, in addition to improving his productivity.
