AI, digital transformation will change Vietnam's e-commerce market by 2025

With the rapid growth of the e-commerce market, new technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data will be increasingly applied in 2025.

E-commerce is becoming an important retail channel in Vietnam and is expected to grow even faster.

According to the retail market overview report released by Metric, Vietnam's e-commerce sales are expected to reach VND387.5 trillion by 2025, with output reaching 4.2 million products.

This figure reflects a staggering growth of 21.5% in revenue and 23% in output, respectively, compared to 2024.

The year 2024 witnessed a remarkable milestone, when the growth rate of sales on e-commerce platforms exceeded 4.2 times the growth rate of total retail sales of goods and consumer services.

This shows that Vietnamese consumers are increasingly trusting and loving online shopping.

Metric predicts that in 2025, this trend will continue to be reinforced by the combination of traditional e-commerce and social commerce.

In 2025, low-cost products, especially those under VND200,000, along with essential items such as food, beverages, diapers and baby milk will continue to dominate the e-commerce market.

This poses a problem for retailers: how can they meet the demand for low prices while maintaining quality and shopping experience?

The answer lies in investing more heavily in research and development (R&D), as well as leveraging technology and data to capture market trends quickly and accurately.

Globally, Zebra Technologies' Global Shopper Study report shows that, soberingly, customer satisfaction with online and in-store shopping is declining.

In 2024, only 79% of online shoppers and 81% of in-store shoppers were satisfied (up from 85% in 2023). The figures are even lower in the Asia-Pacific region, at 75% and 78%, respectively (up from 81% and 80% in 2023).

Faced with this situation, retailers around the world, especially 79% of retailers in the Asia-Pacific region, are planning to increase investment in technology by 2025.

From adopting smart mobile technology to improving inventory monitoring, retailers are working to deliver a more modern shopping experience while helping their staff improve productivity, according to Zebra Technologies.

As online shopping becomes more popular, customers demand accurate, real-time information about product availability. If a product is listed as “in stock” but is not, customer trust is shaken, leading to lost sales.

To solve these problems, technologies such as RFID (radio frequency identification) are becoming a lifesaver, helping retailers confirm the status of goods and improve real-time inventory management.

More than a third of global retailers, and 41% in Asia Pacific, believe that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will change the way they manage inventory and forecast demand.

Additionally, automated processes such as product locator, video surveillance, and out-of-stock alerts are also being ramped up to ensure inventory information is readily available to both employees and customers.

2025 is not only a year of volume growth, but also a time for retailers to reshape the way they operate, leveraging technology to meet rising consumer expectations.

This will contribute to completing the color gamut of e-commerce in the overall picture of Vietnam's digital economy.
