Going to places where there are no people and immersing yourself in the vast nature is a luxury travel trend that many tourists are aiming for.

Have you ever dreamed of waking up in the middle of a vast forest, surrounded by majestic nature or in a comfortable king-sized bed right on the beach with the waves crashing at your feet?

This may sound like fantasy. But Patricia Beckett knows how to make it happen. The Adelaide, Australia, traveler and her husband recently booked a two-night stay on Kangaroo Island to enjoy this experience surrounded by nothing but nature.

The couple stayed in a rectangular room with large, transparent glass doors that gave them a 180-degree view straight out to sea and the Middle River. "You don't see anyone nearby and no one sees you," the tourist said.

The two travelers' stay was luxurious, with a king-size bed and high-quality linens. They could sit on the bed for hours watching the birds. There was split-system air conditioning, a wood-burning fireplace with chopped wood stacked outside, and a full bathroom. The porch had a chaise lounge and a large bathtub. "It was unique. I would definitely come back," said Patricia Beckett.

The Becketts are among those who prefer small, self-contained, isolated accommodations instead of staying overnight in hotels or motels. These types of apartments are currently "storming" the world market. They are located in isolated places, fully equipped and have no motels or hotels nearby.

Cassandra Sasso, CEO of Wander, which produces and operates four self-contained apartments on Kangaroo Island, says more and more travellers are looking for nature-based holidays where they can disconnect from technology and get away from it all. But they still want to live in a comfortable, quality environment with full amenities. This travel trend is what experts call “new escapism”.

The trend was first predicted five years ago by researchers at James Cook University in Brisbane, Australia. It has now spread to the UK, US, Europe, the Middle East and is gradually becoming more widespread in Oceania.

Tourism professor Philip Pearce says there is recognition in the travel industry of a trend known as “new escapism”, where people not only want to get away from their home environment but also want to disconnect from work and everyday life.

Gavin King, CEO of Prefabulous, which operates a number of private luxury accommodations in the US, said people want to get away, disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in nature. They also want to go to rural areas, stay on farms and learn about the lives of farmers. At the same time, today’s travelers want more privacy than they would experience in a hostel or hotel.

The new trend creates a new way to make money for tourism businesses. More and more tourism businesses are regularly installing separate self-contained apartments to expand their accommodation supply system.

Shane Laidlaw, business development director at CABN, a company that provides detached homes, said people are craving different experiences. “I definitely see this type of experience growing – wellness, getting away and disconnecting from technology,” Laidlaw said. He added that catering to this type of “new escapism” promises to be a multi-billion dollar industry.
