Although he won the prestigious gold medal in shooting at the 19th Asian Games, shooter Pham Quang Huy has yet to realize his goal of winning a ticket to the Paris Olympics. Therefore, he is determined to practice to seize the last chance when he attends the world tournament in Brazil next May.
From February 11 to 18, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang and players Tran Hung Nguyen, Pham Thanh Bao, Nguyen Quang Thuan, Ngo Dinh Chuyen, Nguyen Hoang Khang of the Vietnamese swimming team will go to Qatar to compete in the World Swimming Championships, which is also the qualifying round for the 2024 Paris Olympics. After winning an Olympic ticket in the 800m freestyle event, Huy Hoang is aiming for the next ticket in the 1,500m freestyle event. Meanwhile, Pham Thanh Bao is striving to win tickets in the breaststroke events, while Tran Hung Nguyen and Nguyen Quang Thuan are looking for opportunities in the individual medley event.
The Vietnamese weightlifting team is also busy preparing for the Asian Championship in February and the World Championship in April to compete for an Olympic ticket. Trinh Van Vinh has the highest expectations as he is in the top 10 in the world rankings in the 61 kg weight class. In boxing, Nguyen Thi Tam, Ha Thi Linh, and Nguyen Van Duong also have 2 opportunities to hunt for tickets to the Olympics when competing in the qualifying rounds in Italy (February) and Thailand (March). In badminton, tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh is currently ranked 22nd in the world and is considered to have a ticket to the Olympics in the women's singles. In taekwondo, Truong Thi Kim Tuyen continues to train in Korea and compete in Canada and the US to hunt for an Olympic ticket. In gymnastics, Nguyen Van Khanh Phong has the highest expectations and is getting closer to his goal when he regularly participates in international tournaments with Olympic points.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong noted that the Department of Sports and Physical Training as well as the National Sports Training Centers must give special priority to athletes who are performing the tasks of the 2024 Paris Olympics to have the best physical and mental strength to help them feel secure and confident in competing.
Previously, the Department of Sports and Physical Training reviewed and selected 30 talented athletes for special investment to compete for tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
