Goal to win 7, 8 tickets to France

After the conclusion of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 2024 Paralympic Games will take place from August 28 to September 8 in France. According to the leaders of the sports industry, the 2024 Paralympics is one of the important goals of Vietnamese sports, which the sports industry and the Vietnam Paralympic Committee have focused on since the beginning of 2024.

Swimmer Le Tien Dat is one of four Vietnamese athletes with disabilities who won tickets to the 2024 Paralympics.

Up to now, according to the announcement of the Organizing Committee, Vietnamese disabled sports have won 4 official tickets to compete at the 2024 Paralympics in weightlifting with athlete Le Van Cong and swimming with athletes: Le Tien Dat (4th Asian Para Games gold medal), Do Thanh Hai (4th ASEAN Para Games gold medal 2023) and Trinh Thi Bich Nhu.

Pham Dong Anh, Head of Sports for the Disabled (Sports for All Department - Department of Sports and Physical Training), said that since the beginning of the year, the training plan for Vietnamese disabled athletes has been planned to be trained abroad, hiring experts to support the training of athletes in order to have good preparation for the qualifying tournaments for the Paralympics in Paris 2024. Typical examples include the world athletics tournaments in Japan, the world weightlifting championships, the world and Asian swimming tournaments in the UAE and Thailand, and the world badminton tournament (this sport alone does not accumulate points to win tickets to the Paralympics in Paris 2024).

“The sports industry has improved the treatment regime such as nutrition, training equipment, medical care... for athletes competing to win tickets to the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The goal of Vietnamese disabled sports is to win 7-8 tickets (both official and special tickets) to participate in the 2024 Paris Paralympics" - Mr. Pham Dong Anh said.

According to regulations, Paralympic slots are allocated by country (MQS Slot Allocation). Athletes from each country who pass the MQS standard (temporarily called standard A) will help their country gain more points when applying the calculation formula. A total of 178 male athletes and 147 female athletes have won tickets to the Paralympics based on the MQS Slot Allocation rankings. Vietnamese disabled sports will still wait for 4 more slots for weightlifting at the tournament in Thailand at the end of May, while also waiting for consideration for athletics.

Aiming for a further goal

In recent years, sports activities for people with disabilities in Vietnam have been assessed to have developed strongly both in terms of movement and achievements in the international arena. There are about 30,000 people with disabilities regularly participating in sports in the community. Looking back at 2023, the Vietnamese sports delegation for people with disabilities has achieved impressive results when competing successfully at the 12th ASEAN Para Games with 125 athletes competing in 8 out of 14 sports and winning 201 medals (66 gold, 58 silver and 77 bronze), ranking 3rd overall. At the 2023 ASIAN Para Games, the Vietnamese sports delegation for people with disabilities won 1 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals. This is a premise for athletes to have more spirit and motivation to strive and win tickets to the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

Athlete Le Van Cong is the number 1 hope at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

According to the Secretary General of the Vietnam Paralympic Committee Le Duc Tho, in addition to the goal of winning tickets to the 2024 Paris Paralympics, the athletes of Vietnamese disabled sports at the 2024 Paris Paralympics are striving to win medals. Among them, the biggest hope is placed on weightlifter Le Van Cong.

Recently, closing the competition contents at the Para-weightlifting tournament at the 2024 World Cup in Thailand, Vietnamese Para-weightlifters won a total of 5 gold medals, 3 silver medals, thereby ranking 6th. The host team Thailand ranked first overall when winning 15 gold medals, 4 silver medals, 10 bronze medals. The 2024 World Cup is part of the system of calculating achievements and rankings to award official tickets to the 2024 Paralympics. After the tournament in Thailand, the 2024 World Cup for Para-weightlifting has 2 final competitions in Mexico in May and in Georgia in June. Vietnamese Para-weightlifters still have a chance to compete for tickets to France.

"If he wins a medal at this Paralympics, athlete Le Van Cong will set a national record of winning medals three times in a row at the biggest Olympics on the planet. The sports industry evaluates the athlete's chances of winning a medal as well as his efforts and determination during training and competition," said Mr. Le Duc Tho.

In addition to the specific task of participating in the 2024 Paris Paralympics, the goal of Vietnam's disabled sports in the 2024-2029 period is to strive to have 160-165 level 1 athletes participating in year-round training at national and local sports training centers, and send 130 members to participate in the 2026 Southeast Asian Para Games.
