Athlete Le Van Cong won the first medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 2024 Paralympics.
At 5:00 p.m. on September 4, weightlifter Le Van Cong competed in the final round of the 2024 Paralympic weightlifting event in the men's 49kg category. He is the hope of the Vietnamese weightlifting team, alongside weightlifter Nguyen Binh An. Having suffered an injury before the tournament, Le Van Cong chose the first weight of only 171kg - a fairly safe weight. However, when he raised the weight to 176kg in the next round, he failed to do so. Meanwhile, Abdullah Kayapinar (Türkiye) completed the weight of 180kg to rise to the top. Le Van Cong was forced to raise the weight to at least 181kg to compete for the gold medal, in the context that he had just failed at 176kg. In the end, the Vietnamese representative did not complete the weight of 181kg, finishing the competition with 171kg in the first round. This weight was enough for Le Van Cong to win the 2024 Paralympic bronze medal, far surpassing the 4th ranked Nandor Tunkel at 162kg. In the group above, Omar Qarada, after conquering 181kg, raised the weight to 185kg to break Le Van Cong's Paralympic record. However, Jordan's weightlifter failed. He still successfully defended his gold medal with a weight of 181kg but could not surpass Le Van Cong's feat at Rio 2016 (183kg). Abdullah Kayapinar (Türkiye) won the silver medal with 180kg. Le Van Cong officially helped the Vietnamese Sports Delegation achieve its goal of winning a medal at the 2024 Olympics. Le Van Cong is the most successful athlete of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 2024 Paralympics. The athlete from Ha Tinh has won medals at 3 consecutive Olympics: Rio 2016 (gold), Tokyo 2020 (silver) and Paris 2024 (bronze). He also holds the Paralympic record (183kg) and the world record (183.5kg) in the 49kg weight class. At 11pm tonight, September 4, weightlifter Nguyen Binh An will compete in the final round of the men's 54kg weight class. He won two gold medals at the Asian Para Games in 2014 and 2018. His opponents are three athletes who won medals at Tokyo 2020: David Degtyarev (gold), Axel Bourlon (silver) and Dimitrios Bakochristos (bronze).
