Ken Wilson, a resident of Vacaville, California (USA), has lived alone in an apartment in an apartment complex since 2006 and noticed an unusual increase in his electricity bill in recent months.

In an effort to save money, Wilson reduced his electricity usage and purchased a monitoring device to monitor his energy consumption. However, even when he turned off the circuit breaker, the electric meter continued to run, raising suspicions of anomalies in the recording of electricity consumption.

Concerned about the issue, Wilson contacted Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to report it. After receiving the complaint, PG&E sent a representative to inspect the meter at Wilson’s apartment. The inspection revealed that Wilson had been unknowingly paying the electricity bill for the apartment next door since 2009, three years after he moved into his apartment. This meant that for more than 15 years, Wilson had been paying for electricity for a different apartment.

In a statement to ABC News, PG&E acknowledged the error and pledged to quickly fix it.

“A preliminary investigation has revealed that the electricity meter at Mr Wilson’s apartment has been billed to another apartment since 2009,” a company spokesman said.

PG&E has also officially apologized to Wilson and affirmed its commitment to fully correcting the problem. To make up for the confusion, the company has refunded more than $600 to Wilson's account, equivalent to the difference he had paid incorrectly over the past period.

Wilson expressed concern that the confusion may have persisted since before 2009, as he has been using the same agreement with PG&E since moving in 2006 without noticing any problems. He also said he will continue to monitor his electric bills closely going forward to ensure there are no discrepancies.

Additionally, PG&E recommends that other customers, especially those concerned about their electricity usage and billing, verify the ID number on their home electric meter by comparing it to the number on their monthly bill.

This helps ensure that the meter is accurately recording each household's electricity consumption and avoids errors like Wilson's.
