Forbes magazine cited a new travel report from the UK Post Office - a UK-based financial and mailing services company - which has just announced some of the most budget-friendly destinations for 2024. This annual report is aimed at UK tourists, but is still useful for Americans as well.
The report analyzes currency strength, local prices and essential travel costs in 40 popular holiday destinations around the world. It ranks destinations based on the local prices of eight essential travel items, including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. While the report doesn’t factor in factors like hotels and airfare, it does give travellers a better idea of where their money will be best spent.

This is the 18th year the report has been produced. The original report was in British pounds but Forbes has converted it to US dollars, using recent exchange rates.
Topping the list of the cheapest travel destinations right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the report, the total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for travel essentials makes this charming gem a great budget-friendly destination.
Located on the central coast, Hoi An attracts visitors with its UNESCO-listed Old Town, a picturesque location where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It also offers easy access to stunning white-sand beaches, some of the best in Asia, Forbes notes.

Coming in at a close second is Cape Town, South Africa, where spending $68.48 a day on essentials promises an unforgettable experience on Table Mountain and a pristine coastline. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in vibrant culture and world-class cuisine (a three-course meal for two costs an average of just under $44,140) without breaking the bank.

Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This east African coastal destination is filled with white sand, vibrant markets and a rich Swahili heritage, making it a great place for travelers looking to relax and explore the culture.

Surprisingly, Tokyo, Japan, a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity, came in fourth on the list. Just $74.43 a day is enough to cover the essential shopping needs of a tourist.

Rounding out the top five is Portugal’s Algarve, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a lower cost than in previous years. With plenty of sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and fresh seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travellers looking for a rich yet affordable getaway.
