Within the framework of the Closing Ceremony of the National Biodiversity Restoration Year, Quang Nam - 2024, on February 21, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province announced the Decision to establish Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve.
Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, is classified as a Nature Reserve and was established on the basis of inheriting Cu Lao Cham Marine Reserve and supplementing the natural forest ecosystem on the islands, aiming at comprehensive management, linking forest, marine and coastal ecosystems.

The nature reserve has administrative boundaries in Tan Hiep commune, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, with a total area of 23,530 ha, with geographical coordinates ranging from 15 0 52'30" to 16 0 00'00" N and 108 0 24'00" to 108 0 33'30" E and is divided into functional zones including: Strict Protection zone; Ecological Restoration zone; Service - administrative zone; and buffer zone. The system of 07 islands includes: Hon Lao, Hon Cu, Hon Kho, Hon La, Hon Dai, Hon Mo, and Hon Tai. Of these, Hon Lao has the largest area, with about 1,147 ha, and is the place where the community of Tan Hiep island commune lives and works.
Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve possesses extremely diverse and rich natural resources. Special-use forests with more than 624 species of vascular plants have been identified, including many species in the endangered, rare and valuable medicinal groups (365 species of medicinal value/624 recorded species) and especially 52 rare and precious plant species prioritized for conservation, listed in the Vietnam Red Book; Decree 06/2019/ND-CP of the Government on the management of endangered and rare forest plants and animals; IUCN Red List such as Acampe ochracea (Lindl.) Hochr), Phong ba, silver sea, Rubi (Argusia argentea (L. f.) Heine), Curculigo orchioides Gaertn, Cycas rumphii Miq, Madhuca pasquieri (Dub.) HJ Lam),... Besides, there is also diversity of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects.
The marine ecosystem records the diversity of marine flora and fauna such as seagrass beds, seaweed systems, coral reefs, valuable aquatic species such as Spiny Lobster, Red Lobster, etc.
Every year, Cu Lao Cham Island attracts a lot of tourists.
In addition, Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve also possesses unique landscape and human resource values and the participation of the whole community in the conservation of natural resources. This place is considered the center of connection and harmony between nature, people and historical culture, an extremely important highlight in the process of formation and development of the area. Prominent cultural and historical factors include ancient cultures such as Sa Huynh, Champa, Dai Viet. In addition, the excavated relics have proven the relationship and exchange between Cu Lao Cham and countries in the region and are the anchorage point of international merchant ships on the Silk Road journey at sea formed from the 13th century.
