One of the mothers, Miriam Al Adib, posted a video of the incident on her Instagram account to help raise awareness about the situation.
She recounted how one of her daughters told her someone had used an app to create nude photos of her. They later discovered that the same thing had happened to dozens of other young women.
Francisco Mendoza, a regional government official, told local media that police had identified several young people who may have been involved in creating the images.
Al Adib called on those responsible to work together to fix the problem and said there were concerns that the images could be uploaded to pornographic websites. “Using other people’s photos for this purpose and sending them around is a very serious crime,” she said.
Another mother, Fátima Gomez, said a teenage boy tried to blackmail her daughter with edited nude photos. When her daughter refused, the boy sent her another AI-generated nude photo.
The incident comes amid a growing problem of sexual assault and gender-based violence in Spain. Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, recently resigned and was put on trial for kissing women's World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso without her consent.
Separately, Spanish police have arrested a man for sexual assault after he touched a journalist's buttocks while she was reporting live from the streets of Madrid on September 14.
