(NB&CL) The assessment and screening of works from press agencies and local grassroots associations is always one of the key steps to screen quality works for each National Press Awards season. The same goes for the 19th National Press Awards season - 2024, careful and wise screening from the grassroots will be the foundation for obtaining the best quality press works...
Arousing the spirit of "competition" to participate in the National Press Awards
Every year, the time when the Association at all levels organizes the collection, appraisal and screening of works from the grassroots branches is very important. The Association of Journalists at all levels coordinates with local press agencies not only to guide and call on reporters and members to submit quality works to participate in the competition but also to devote much effort to appraising and selecting the best works to participate.
Journalist Trinh Van Anh - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Chairman of the Bac Giang Journalists Association said: The selection of works from the grassroots level is very invested, from guiding reporters and members to choose topics, themes, and special topics to evaluating press products, all are implemented scientifically and with quality. One of our advantages is that we seem to have created a routine, arousing in each of our reporters the spirit of "competing" to participate in the Press Awards.
In recent years, Bac Giang Newspaper has constantly strived to innovate and improve the quality of press publications. Many works have won high prizes in the National Press Awards and press awards organized by central departments, ministries and branches. Typically, last year, many works won prestigious awards such as: National Press Award for writing about Party building - "Golden Hammer and Sickle" Award; Provincial Press Award - Than Nhan Trung Award; Award for writing about models and typical examples of "Skillful Mass Mobilization" in the whole province...
“This tradition and foundation are the premise, motivation, and promise of quality press products for this year's National Press Awards season… ” – journalist Trinh Van Anh affirmed.
The press works appraisal council in Bac Giang are all reputable journalists responsible for selecting and screening quality press works.
Not only that, as a person who holds "two roles" - both the leader of the provincial newspaper and the leader of the Association, journalist Trinh Van Anh said that the orientation for members and reporters as well as the methods of selecting and screening works at the Bac Giang Journalists Association are very close, thoughtful, and standard.
The Chairman of the Bac Giang Provincial Journalists Association said: “The press products sent by reporters are all selected by the Appraisal Council through the “green eyes” of the leaders of press agencies, leaders of the Journalists Association and prestigious journalists in the area. We believe that the National Press Award is the most prestigious award, so the participating products must also be carefully selected, cautious and must be the highest quality products possible. Of course, this year there are two new types of awards, the creative press award and the multimedia press award, which are very good and very trendy, but this is the first year so we do not have a suitable roadmap to implement as expected, but we also try to participate in testing some works in this new form and will definitely invest more next year”.
Striving for a quality season…
Thai Nguyen is one of the localities that “reached the finish line” the earliest, on time, in selecting works from the grassroots. At this time, the collection of works has been completed, with 36 best works sent to the Central Office of the Vietnam Journalists Association.
Sharing about the implementation process, journalist Nguyen Bao Lam - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Journalists Association said: According to the instructions and documents of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Standing Committee of the Association allocated the number of works to the Branches and Inter-Branch Associations to work with the Editorial Boards of press agencies to select works from the grassroots. The Provincial Journalists Association has coordinated with local press agencies to widely mobilize reporters and editors, encouraging participation, especially in two new genres: Multimedia Journalism and Creative Journalism. This is an opportunity for journalists to demonstrate their abilities and keep up with modern journalism trends.
Reporters from Thai Nguyen Radio and Television Station conduct live and online broadcasts.
Evaluating the press works participating in this year's award, journalist Nguyen Bao Lam said that basically, members and reporters in the area have made great efforts in creating traditional press works. However, with the two new press genres added, many reporters and editors have not prepared in advance, leading to challenges in choosing suitable works.
Although in reality, press agencies in Thai Nguyen have many products applying digital technology, using multimedia in their works, to meet the competition standards, the works need to have a higher investment in the form of expression, content quality and creativity. In addition, creative journalism and multimedia require a high level of expertise in technology, from graphic design, video editing to data mining and artificial intelligence (AI).
Meanwhile, most local press teams are still in the process of approaching and familiarizing themselves with new technological tools. Not all press units have enough human resources and equipment to produce works that meet the competition standards. This requires stronger investment in technical infrastructure, as well as in-depth training for reporters to improve their creativity and application of technology in their works...
“With the determination of the Thai Nguyen journalism team, we believe that there will be quality works that meet the requirements of the award. In the coming time, the Provincial Journalists Association will also increase professional support, organize seminars and talks on multimedia and creative journalism to help journalists gain more knowledge and necessary skills, improve the quality of works submitted to the National Press Awards and other press awards and competitions at the central and provincial levels…” – journalist Nguyen Bao Lam affirmed.
