A semi-submersible drug-carrying vessel
The ship was discovered by the Colombian Navy on May 9, when it was en route to Central America, according to AFP on May 12. This is a shipping route frequently used by drug gangs to smuggle drugs into the United States.
All the sailors on board were Colombian, aged 45, 54 and 63. The Colombian Navy said the three sailors claimed they were controlled by a drug trafficking organization to control the ship.
Over the past three decades, the Colombian Navy has seized 228 homemade semi-submersibles. They are called semi-submersibles because they do not move completely underwater, but only partially submerged, but still enough to escape the coast guard’s observation.
Some ships were seized en route to the United States, while others were intercepted in the Atlantic, heading towards Europe.
The ship seized on May 9 was also the largest semi-submersible drug-carrying vessel in the country since 1993.
How much does the Colombian drug trafficker's homemade submarine weigh?
The Colombian Navy estimated the total value of the drugs on board at around $103 million.
Colombia, the world's largest producer of cocaine, punishes those who use, manufacture, sell, possess or transport semi-submersibles with up to 14 years in prison.
