Strengthening science and technology research for a sustainable future of water resources, meteorology and energy

In response to World Water Day (March 22), World Meteorological Day (March 23) and Earth Hour Campaign (last Saturday of March), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) has continuously promoted propaganda, research and technology development to address challenges related to water, climate and energy. These efforts not only contribute to the protection of natural resources but also play an important role in the sustainable development of Vietnam.

In 2025, the United Nations launched World Water Day with the theme "Conserving glaciers", emphasizing the role of ice and snow in the global climate system and hydrological cycle. Along with that, World Meteorological Day carries the message "Joining hands for a comprehensive early warning system", calling for cooperation between countries to improve disaster warning capacity. The Earth Hour campaign with the theme "Green transition, green future" continues to promote green economic models and sustainable lifestyles.

Faced with the complex impacts of climate change, especially melting glaciers, declining water resources, increasing natural disasters and inefficient use of energy sources, raising awareness and applying science and technology are prerequisites for sustainable development.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has managed and coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and many related units to promote the implementation of national science and technology programs and other programs... to contribute to solving problems related to water resources, protecting wetlands, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting green, circular and sustainable economy, saving energy, conserving biodiversity, contributing to promoting the implementation of millennium goals, socio-economic development, environmental protection within the river basin, national and global scope... improving human resources and regional science and technology potential.

At the same time, the Ministry of Science and Technology has developed and implemented a number of specific policies to support environmental management and protection such as: Research, application, development and technology transfer policies, including supporting the development of science and technology in the environmental industry; environmental protection, natural disaster prevention and climate change response; warning and forecasting of natural disasters and marine environmental incidents, responding to climate change in Vietnam's sea areas to serve the sustainable development of the marine economy... through national-level S&T programs such as: Program KC.06/21-30 "Research, application and development of advanced technology to serve the environmental industry", Program "S&T research to serve environmental protection, natural disaster prevention and response to climate change" - KC.08/21-30, Program KC.14/21-30 "S&T research to serve water security and safety of dams and reservoirs", Program KC.15/21-30 "S&T to respond to climate change to serve the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta until 2030"...

In addition, implementing Decision No. 562/QD-TTg dated April 25, 2017 of the Prime Minister approving the Basic Science Development Program in the fields of Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Marine Sciences for the period 2017-2025 (Program 562), in 2024, the Ministry of Science and Technology organized the implementation of 08 tasks on Marine Sciences.

In the coming time, the Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to closely follow the contents of the Resolutions and Program frameworks approved by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Science and Technology, such as: continuing to implement national-level S&T tasks and task clusters to comprehensively solve major issues such as marine biodiversity conservation, protection of marine resources and environment, prevention and control of landslides, saltwater intrusion, etc.; implementing research tasks associated with the needs of marine economic development of localities with seas and islands and associated with enterprises; applying new technologies to hydrometeorological monitoring; promoting clean energy conversion, energy saving, developing renewable energy technology, green production models; Strengthen training and development of marine human resources, promote international cooperation with countries with strengths in marine science and technology in scientific research and application of modern technology in marine economic sectors, environmental protection, natural disaster prevention and response, and adaptation to climate change and rising sea levels... Thereby , gradually affirming the pioneering role in protecting water resources, climate and energy, towards a sustainable development future./.
