(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - During the 21 years of resistance war against the US to save the country, the youth of the North and South devoted themselves to the goal of regaining peace and national independence, including many students, intellectuals, and artists. They followed the Party to the end and left behind diary entries with the belief in the victory of the Vietnamese people.
In the atmosphere of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Quang Ngai Liberation Day, the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, and the reunification of the country, reading war diaries, we cannot help but be moved. The book "War Diary" by writer, martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Chu Cam Phong leaves a beautiful image of a revolutionary soldier who lived and fought selflessly for national independence. Born in Quang Nam, gathered in the North, after graduating from Hanoi University, refusing to study abroad, Chu Cam Phong (1941 - 1971) volunteered to return to his hometown to directly write and fight. In his diary on the 7th anniversary of his admission to the Party (January 8, 1963 - January 8, 1970), Chu Cam Phong wrote: “I may have to sacrifice a lot in this historic spring... But no matter what, I will not change my motto in life: Brave, passionate and selfless like the true communist soldiers who went before. Even if I fall an hour, half an hour before we achieve complete victory, I will still be very happy!”. Regarding literature, Chu Cam Phong determined: “First of all, I am a party member and then an artist” and voluntarily sacrificed all my strength, intelligence and talent to serve the task of liberating the South and unifying the country: “The upcoming literary and artistic work is also very heavy and urgent... Let's sacrifice all our strength, intelligence and talent for this historic task”. The book "War Diary" and two other works of Chu Cam Phong were posthumously awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts (2007).
As for Dr. Dang Thuy Tram (1942-1970), after graduating from Hanoi Medical University in 1966, she volunteered to go to the South to join the resistance war and heroically sacrificed herself on the Quang Ngai battlefield. In her diary (Dang Thuy Tram's Diary), she stated what she always kept in mind: "Must strive to be worthy of the name of a communist". During the war, she always turned her heart to the Party, despite experiencing loss and sacrifice, still firmly believing in the truth "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom": "We have shed many tears, shed much blood. We do not regret anything in exchange for independence and freedom".
Nguyen Van Thac (1952-1972) in his diary “Life Story” (Forever Twenty) took Paven Coocsaghin as the ideal model of a communist even though he was not yet a party member: “Paven is a true person, a true party member. Of course, he must be a child of the working class, loyal to the Party all his life, and devote his whole life to the revolution”. As an excellent student of Literature in the whole North, Nguyen Van Thac went to the battlefield with a burning desire for literature, willing to dedicate his literature and blood to the common cause of the Party: “Be bold, bold in taking notes and writing. Contribute to life with blood and poetry”. More specifically, in addition to his diary entries, he correctly predicted the victory date of April 30, 1975 in a number of letters to his friends: “Let’s not simply seek profound truths through prose, poems, or math problems. On April 30, 1975, T will answer P’s question: What is happiness?” Then in a letter dated September 4, 1971, Thac (at that time, codenamed Lan) also reminded: “As I remember wrongly, Lan said that the answer to the question “What is happiness” would be on April 30, 1975, not April 11, 1975?” He correctly predicted the liberation date of the South nearly 4 years earlier.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Quang Ngai Liberation Day (March 24, 1975 - March 24, 2025), the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), let's recall a few lines about the war diaries to see that, for Vietnamese youth, especially when the country was invaded by foreign countries, the communist ideal was always the goal to devote to the end even if it meant sacrifice. Read the war diaries to understand and let today's young generation continue to promote the revolutionary tradition of their fathers and brothers, contributing to building their homeland and country in the new era of development.
