According to GizmoChina , Windows 12 may be released next year, with much speculation in the tech industry that this move will list Windows 11 as a legacy operating system, and also end support for older platforms. Following this trend, many other tech companies are also gradually ending support for older versions of Windows. One of them, the gaming platform Steam, is also about to implement a similar move.

Steam is about to stop supporting old versions of Windows

Specifically, in March this year, the world's largest online game store announced that it would stop supporting some older operating systems. Now, this announcement is about to take effect, from January 1, 2024, Steam will no longer be compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Users will be required to upgrade to Windows 10, Windows 11, or the upcoming Windows 12.

It’s clear that in less than 15 days, many players on older platforms will no longer be able to use Steam. According to Steam’s November survey, only 1% of Steam users are still using older versions of Windows. While that number may seem small, it’s worth noting that the total number of Steam users is estimated to be around 1.2 billion by December 2023. So that meager 1% could be as many as 12 million people.

If you're still using older versions like Windows 7 out of nostalgia, habit, financial constraints, or other reasons, then right now, you should consider upgrading to the latest version so you can continue enjoying games on Steam.
