The enrollment target for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year of 114 public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to reach 80%, an increase of 10% compared to last year.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the enrollment quota for grade 10 is determined based on many factors. This year, the enrollment quota is determined based on the maximum capacity of each school, especially in localities with few vocational secondary schools and non-public schools, to create conditions for students to study at public high schools.

End of March, announce enrollment targets

In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City is expected to have more than 88,000 students graduating from grade 9, a decrease of nearly 26,000 students compared to the previous school year. Meanwhile, the enrollment target for grade 10 has increased by 10% compared to the previous school year. Based on the number of students expected to graduate from grade 9, the expected enrollment target for grade 10 this year is about more than 70,000 students.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will have 114 public high schools. After submitting to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for consideration and approval, the city's Department of Education and Training will announce specific enrollment targets for each school, expected by the end of March 2025. The enrollment target for grade 10 is an extremely important basis for students to set their wishes for the grade 10 exam next June.

In addition, two famous specialized high schools in Ho Chi Minh City, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, also plan to increase their enrollment quota for grade 10 compared to last year. Accordingly, Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School will increase its enrollment quota by 70, to 525; Le Hong Phong Specialized High School will enroll 805 students.

In the suburban areas of Ho Chi Minh City, the 10th grade quota has some fluctuations. This year, because Vo Truong Toan High School (District 12) is building a new school, the quota will be reduced. Therefore, some neighboring schools are expected to increase their enrollment quota to meet the demand for public 10th grade places for students in the area.

Exam questions with increased practical application

This year's 10th grade exam is the first exam under the 2018 General Education Program. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the 10th grade entrance exam includes 3 subjects: math, literature and foreign language. In which, the basis for assessing literature is the requirements for reading comprehension and writing in the 2018 Literature Program for secondary school level, mainly grades 8 and 9.

In mathematics, the exam will include the following knowledge streams: geometry and measurement; numbers and algebra; statistics and probability. The exam will require students to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve practical problems; encourage self-study and creativity, and avoid rote learning. The basis for the assessment of the math exam is the requirements to be achieved in the 2018 Program - secondary school math, mainly grades 8 and 9.

In foreign languages ​​(mainly English), the test aims to assess language ability, not only based on students' memorised knowledge but also includes the ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts. The test will have 2 new questions on writing appropriate phrases based on the given information. This question tests the ability to read dictionary notes to find language information and apply knowledge.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the ratio of knowledge levels in the exam has also been adjusted to reduce the level of recognition and understanding and increase the rate of application.

Specifically, in the 10th grade entrance exams from 2024 onwards, the number of questions at the recognition and comprehension level accounts for 70%-75% of the knowledge in the exam. From 2025, the number of recognition and comprehension questions will decrease to 60%, the number of questions requiring application will increase to 40%.

This adjustment is to assess students' ability to apply learned knowledge to solve practical problems according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program. To do well on the exam, students need to avoid rote learning; instead, they need to develop self-study and problem-solving skills.

Hanoi: Receiving 10th grade application forms on April 18

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the 10th grade public entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year will take place on June 7 and 8. On June 9, candidates registering for the exam at 4 specialized high schools will take exams in specialized subjects. On April 18, 9th grade students will submit the "Application form for admission to 10th grade high school for the 2025-2026 school year".

According to regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 10th grade admission period for the 2025-2026 school year, each student can register to apply to a maximum of 3 public high schools, ranked in order 1, 2 and 3. Of which, wishes 1 and 2 must be in the prescribed admission area; wish 3 can be in any admission area.

Ho Chi Minh City: Admission in 2 phases

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, there are two methods of enrolling students in grade 10. First, admission to Thanh An Secondary and High School, Can Gio District (only for students who graduated from secondary school at this school in the 2024-2025 school year). Second, the entrance exam, conducted with candidates who graduated from secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City.

The entrance exam is conducted in 2 phases. Phase 1: Students register for 3 priority wishes 1, 2, 3 to take the entrance exam for grade 10 at public high schools (except Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, and Ho Chi Minh City National University High School).

Phase 2: Depending on the actual application situation at high schools and the needs of high schools, the Department of Education and Training will decide on additional enrollment and issue written instructions to ensure the rights of candidates, on the basis of recruiting enough enrollment quotas for schools that are still lacking many quotas.
