Thai National Assembly Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said on July 27 that the legislature is scheduled to convene on August 4, but whether or not a vote to elect a prime minister will take place will depend on the outcome of a meeting of the Constitutional Court held a day earlier.

According to Mr. Wan Muhamad, the Constitutional Court of Thailand may issue a conclusion on August 3 on whether to accept or not the Office of the Ombudsman's petition requesting the court to rule on the constitutionality of the July 19 decision of the National Assembly to reject the re-nomination of the leader of the Progressive Party (MFP) Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister.

If the Constitutional Court does not accept the petition, the Thai parliament could hold a vote to elect a prime minister the following day, Mr Wan said. But if the court accepts the Ombudsman's application, the vote will be postponed until the court makes a final ruling, which could be a week later.

The next prime ministerial election is expected to feature a candidate from the Pheu Thai Party, after the Forward Party stepped aside to pave the way for Pheu Thai to lead the coalition to form a new government.

Previously, on July 25, President of the Thai National Assembly Wan Muhamad Noor Matha announced the postponement of the bicameral meeting of the National Assembly scheduled for July 27 to elect a new Prime Minister, pending a ruling from the Constitutional Court.

A meeting between the Senate and House of Representatives representatives and the House Speaker scheduled for July 26 was also cancelled at a time when Thailand will enter a holiday from July 28 to August 2 to celebrate the birthday of King Maha Vajiralongkorn./.
