When fighting broke out in April 2023, the RSF quickly seized the Presidential Palace and much of the capital, Khartoum. However, in recent months, the Sudanese army has counterattacked, gradually advancing towards the Presidential Palace along the Nile River.

The RSF still controls parts of Khartoum, neighboring Omdurman and western Sudan, where they are fighting for control of the city of Al-Fashir, the army's last bastion in the Darfur region.
The battle for the Presidential Palace has been going on for weeks, with the RSF fiercely defending its position, using snipers stationed around buildings in central Khartoum. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF leader, has ordered his troops not to abandon the Presidential Palace.
From Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, several large explosions were heard, as the Sudanese army carried out airstrikes and drone attacks on the center of Khartoum, according to witnesses and military sources.
Although the Sudanese military has an advantage in air power, the RSF has recently shown signs of increasing its drone warfare capabilities.
If the Sudanese army captures the entire capital, this could give them complete control over central Sudan and cement the East-West territorial divide between the two rival factions.
The war in Sudan has led to the world's worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations. Famine is raging in many areas, while disease is spreading across the country.
