Speaking to reporters, Mr. Huynh Thanh Minh, Head of Economic Department - Deputy Head of the Office of New Rural Area Coordination of Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, said: Implementing the program "One Commune One Product" (OCOP), Phu Quoc City has many advantages, being a famous tourist destination in the country, region and the world. Every year, tourists come to visit, shop and enjoy local products and specialties, thereby determining the construction of traditional and key local products into OCOP products to serve domestic and foreign tourists and consumers.

Besides, Phu Quoc has many traditional products, each local commune and ward has its own specialties, this is the basis for mobilizing businesses, production and processing facilities to participate in the OCOP program.
In particular, with the close attention and direction of the City Party Committee, the City People's Committee, the coordination of the city's departments, agencies, unions, People's Committees of communes and wards, and the guidance of provincial-level specialized agencies, Phu Quoc's OCOP program has developed strongly.
What OCOP products does Phu Quoc have?
When mentioning Phu Quoc specialties, many people will immediately think of traditional fish sauce made from anchovies from the Southwest sea. Phu Quoc fish sauce has a history of formation and development of over 200 years, not only a local brand but also a strong national brand that has been known to many countries around the world as a famous brand.

A researcher said that in Phu Quoc, there are many families that have become famous thanks to making fish sauce. And conversely, Phu Quoc fish sauce with famous brands for hundreds of years such as: Khai Hoan, Thanh Quoc, My Hao, Hai Son, Hong Duc, Huynh Khoa, Kim Hoa, Sang Tuoi, Thanh Ha, Hiep Thanh, Huynh Thanh, Hung Thanh... has created prestige for the families that gave birth to it.
As one of the first families in Phu Quoc to make traditional fish sauce, Mr. Truong Duc Phuong, owner of Hong Duc Private Enterprise, shared that his family has been making traditional anchovy fish sauce for three generations. Phu Quoc fish sauce in general and Hong Duc fish sauce in particular are traditionally produced by mixing fish with salt in a ratio of 3 fish to 1 salt, the fermentation time is 12 months, then mixed to produce the finished product called fish sauce. The fish sauce has a light aroma, dark pink-brown color, salty taste on the tip of the tongue, and sweet and fatty aftertaste of anchovies.
Currently, his business has about 100 fermentation tanks, producing about 50 tanks annually, with an output of about 300,000 liters of fish sauce. However, in the past, his family mainly produced and sold raw products to partners, only keeping a portion to bottle and sell under the traditional Hong Duc anchovy fish sauce brand.

To promote the brand to be known by many consumers nationwide, when encouraged by the Phu Quoc City Economic Department, Mr. Phuong registered to make a profile for recognition of OCOP products. In August 2023, Mr. Phuong's business had 5 products recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, including: Hong Duc fish sauce 30 degrees of nitrogen, 35 degrees of nitrogen, 40 degrees of nitrogen, 43 degrees of nitrogen and Phu Quoc Hong Duc geographical indication fish sauce 43 degrees of nitrogen.
“In the era of competition in terms of brand and quality, the product being recognized by the authorities as meeting OCOP standards is a passport for local specialty products to confidently serve consumers and compete with other fish sauce brands. In the coming time, I will invest in meeting the criteria and register to upgrade the products to 4 stars, to increase the value of my products,” Mr. Truong Duc Phuong shared.
Also a traditional fish sauce brand that makes up the Phu Quoc fish sauce brand is My Hao fish sauce. Mr. Ngo Thanh Trung, owner of My Hao fish sauce private enterprise, said that his family's fish sauce making profession has gone through 3 generations, in 1960, his grandmother was the one who started the business. With the determination to preserve and develop this traditional profession, Mr. Trung brought the 45-degree nitrogen fish sauce product line to register and achieve 3-star OCOP certification.

According to Mr. Trung, his company has a factory in Duong To commune with 45 fermentation tanks, each containing 10-12 tons of anchovies. After 12 months of fermentation, his factory will have about 300,000 liters of fish sauce per year.
“My Hao fish sauce and many other Phu Quoc fish sauce factories previously mainly produced raw products, paying little attention to the brand and market. After the Covid-19 pandemic, partners did not buy or reduced the quantity, causing the factories to struggle. Therefore, building a brand and market is very important, helping the factories to be proactive and not dependent on partners. Registering OCOP products is the most effective way to build and promote the brand during this period. Since My Hao fish sauce was recognized as meeting OCOP standards, and the city brought the product to promote from the South to the North, the My Hao fish sauce brand has become more known and trusted by many people.
In the near future, I will register for 3-star OCOP products for my 35 and 43-degree fish sauce lines and upgrade to 4-star for the 45-degree product," Trung shared.

Promoting Phu Quoc OCOP products to reach further
In order for Phu Quoc's OCOP products to be known to more and more domestic and foreign consumers, the Economic Department of Phu Quoc City has actively encouraged entities to put OCOP-standard products on e-commerce trading floors, ensuring good maintenance of the production chain to product supply, publishing the city's OCOP products; supporting entities to introduce and promote products on e-commerce sites inside and outside the province, such as: Postmart-VNPost, the National OCOP product management and monitoring system, etc.
