After only 4 years as village chief, Mr. Nguyen Ban has turned village 3, Huong Giang commune (Huong Khe, Ha Tinh) from a bottom-ranking village to a bright spot in the new rural construction movement.
Huong Giang commune is known as one of the “flood center” areas in Huong Khe district. This is also a difficult commune, just a few years ago, we often followed sponsors to this locality to give gifts to support people affected by floods and to build new rural areas.
Among them, village 3 is one of the last villages in the commune to build a new rural area. However, in recent years, the village has completely changed, becoming a model countryside with wide, flat concrete roads, straight green fences, solid houses...
People in village 3, Huong Giang commune actively build a model residential area.
Mr. Luu Van Tam (90 years old) shared: "Our hometown has changed so much. What visitors who come here notice is the landscape, but the biggest change in us is the people. People's awareness is very different now, everyone is for the common good, they are willing to contribute, build a more beautiful hometown. This important change originates from Mr. Nguyen Ban - the special - talented but humble village chief of village 3".
During our first meeting, we also found Mr. Ban to be a modest person, who preferred to do rather than talk. It was only after the introduction of a commune official that Mr. Ban stopped to "cooperate" and share about the journey of building a model residential area in the village.
Hamlet 3 has a fairly large area of over 37 hectares, with more than 100 households living, of which about 40% are Catholics. Being a flood-prone area, the hamlet has many poor households and policy families. Huong Giang commune has met the NTM standards since 2020, but it was not until early 2022 that hamlet 3 was assigned to strive to build a model residential area.
Mr. Ban is always the leader in movements, spending his own efforts and money to help the village complete the criteria.
Mr. Ban recalled that Village 3 was one of the last localities in the commune to build a model residential area. I myself encountered many difficulties during the implementation process. People were still skeptical, customs and practices were still burdensome, the material life of households was uneven, and the amount of criteria implemented compared to regulations was still very large...
With the high determination of the Party Committee, the village development committee organized many meetings of the people and inter-household group meetings. Mass organizations joined in, propagandizing, mobilizing, and doing ideological work to create consensus among the people. Next, the village organized for some households to visit and study in other localities, from which the people gradually raised their awareness and determination, enthusiastically participating in the tasks assigned by the village development committee. The direction work always followed the motto of people knowing, people doing, people checking, and people enjoying, being open, transparent, and discussing and reaching consensus during the implementation process.
“To create a movement, I myself “sacrificed” my housework, spent hundreds of working days going to every alley, knocking on every door, checking each subject, holding hands and showing people how to do things, working with people, doing easy things first, difficult things later. Besides, I also contributed money to build items at the village cultural house” – Mr. Ban continued.
Many muddy, narrow paths in village 3 have now been widened into spacious roads.
Mr. Luu Minh Thien - a resident of village 3 excitedly boasted: "Following Mr. Ban's example and responding to the movement, my family donated nearly 1,000m2 of land and hundreds of trees to open the road. Thanks to that, my house now has "3 fronts", the village road is as solid and spacious as the commune or district road."
Up to now, village 3 has mobilized thousands of working days; people have invested billions of dong to fill the land, arrange household gardens, plant key crops, thereby building 13 model gardens. The whole village has planted more than 3,600m of green fences, mobilized the relocation of 21 barns, demolished 19 unreasonable sanitation facilities, built 68 septic tanks, covered 45 livestock barns, built 36 bathrooms, bought 200 waste sorting bins, and eliminated 2 wild gardens.
Mr. Ban added that since being assigned to build a model village, the whole village has built and upgraded 156m of alley roads, 250m of concrete roads in the fields, and installed 3.7km of electricity to light up the village. The village cultural house has been upgraded, equipped with speakers, machines, backdrops, bookshelves, sports equipment, tables and chairs for people to participate in activities.
The new rural landscape in village 3 has many improvements.
At the same time, people's lives are also increasingly improving, people are enthusiastically competing to plant trees, garden, expand livestock, and actively produce. Currently, more than 80% of households in the village have tractors for production. In their spare time, people take advantage of doing side jobs such as construction workers, harvesting acacia wood... so people's income is basically stable.
From the bottom of the village, village 3 has grown strongly to become one of the rich and beautiful localities. Along with the efforts of the people, the commune highly appreciates the contributions of the village chief. With the efforts and results achieved, at the end of 2023, village 3 was recognized as meeting the standards of a model residential area.
