The US Congress passed a spending bill that does not include a key demand of President-elect Donald Trump, while he sued the government over border wall materials.
The US Senate in the early hours of December 21 passed a temporary spending bill to prevent a government shutdown, following turmoil caused by President-elect Donald Trump’s demand that the bill include raising the debt ceiling. The bill passed did not include the above proposal, despite increasing pressure between Mr. Trump and the US administration in the final weeks of his term.
Congress determined
Senators voted 85-11 to approve a temporary spending bill through March 14, 2025, which includes more than $100 billion in disaster relief and economic assistance for farmers. According to The Hill , these provisions were supported by the majority of Democrats. The bill then went to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.
"Tonight, the Senate delivered more good news for America. There will be no government shutdown right before Christmas. This is a good bill. It will keep the government open, help Americans affected by hurricanes and natural disasters, help farmers and avoid harmful cuts," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote.
Previously, the 1,547-page bill was rejected in the House of Representatives after being introduced on December 17, due to Mr. Trump's influence and requests, including raising the debt ceiling. House Speaker Mike Johnson had to consider many proposals. By the evening of December 20, the US House of Representatives passed the bill with a vote of 336 - 34, of which 34 votes against came from the Republican Party. According to CNN citing a source, Mr. Trump expressed disappointment that the bill did not raise the debt ceiling, causing difficulties for him in the upcoming term.
Why do some Republican congressmen oppose the budget bill even though Mr. Trump supports it?
Trump sues the government
In another development, Mr. Trump is asking the court to intervene, after accusing President Biden's administration of illegally dumping border wall materials. The new move from Mr. Trump's team is based on information from the Daily Wire that the US government organized a "sale" of construction materials intended to build a wall on the border with Mexico to prevent illegal immigration.
"Today, President (elect) Trump filed a brief in the Southern District of Texas asking a federal judge to immediately halt the Biden administration's 'dumping' of border wall materials at rock-bottom prices and order an investigation," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said. Any effort by officials to obstruct Trump's border wall construction plans would be "illegal, unconstitutional and potentially criminal," Cheung said.
According to Newsweek , the White House did not immediately comment on the information above. Contrary to the information in the above article, last year's defense policy bill required the administration to distribute or sell unused border wall materials, which the administration complied with over the summer.
Edit spending bill
According to Politico, the US government spending bill passed did not include a provision to raise the debt ceiling. However, more than 1,000 pages were deleted from the bill, which included proposals that Mr. Trump opposed, including restrictions on US investment in China, stricter regulations on advertising tickets to events and regulations on pharmaceutical profit management, aimed at lowering prescription drug prices.
