Facebook will delete livestream videos in Vietnam after 30 days

"From July 3, live videos on Facebook from more than 30 days ago will be deleted," Facebook sent a notice to some users in Vietnam on the morning of March 7.

When starting a livestream session, users also receive a similar message: "This video will be deleted after 30 days due to a change in live video storage. You can download this content to your device via the video's three-dot menu."

Ngoc Anh, a fashion store owner who regularly livestreams sales on Facebook, said the social network's announcement confused her and many other online business people.

"I still don't know why the user's video was deleted. Livestream sessions are not only for selling products but also for reviewing the purchase and sale content when there is a dispute, and needing to compare information. This is especially necessary for both buyers and sellers," Ngoc Anh said.

Facebook sends notice to delete live videos from July 3

In its announcement, Facebook said users will have two options: download or transfer to another platform. In the local storage option, Facebook allows downloading all live videos at once.

Additionally, users can transfer videos to other platforms with two options: Google Drive and Dropbox. Transferring videos to other platforms can be scheduled automatically, once or multiple times.

According to Ngoc Anh, Facebook's new regulations make non-tech-savvy people like her quite worried. "If I download all the videos, I'm afraid my computer won't have enough memory to store them. If I switch to other platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox, I'll have to create more accounts or buy more storage space," Ngoc Anh said.

Many users said they were willing to pay for additional Facebook storage instead of switching to another platform.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mai Thanh Phu, an expert in providing services on social networks, said that deleting videos will directly affect sellers or personal brands. "Accounts that have had many live sessions and interactions will create a sense of prestige with customers. In addition, famous people may lose interesting videos or waste time and effort storing them."

Before Facebook's change, some users started converting their livestream videos to Reels format. Although it is in the same ecosystem as Facebook, Reels only allows posting videos up to 90 seconds long.

Changes to Facebook Live Video Storage

Facebook has been deleting livestream videos after 30 days since mid-February in international markets. Vietnam is among the late adopters, only starting to apply it in early July.

According to TechCrush , Facebook's change in livestream video storage policy is one of the moves to promote the short video platform Reels.

According to experts, deleting livestream videos could cause Facebook to lose its competitive advantage over its rivals. Twitch, one of Facebook Live's biggest rivals, allows Twitch Partners, Affiliates, and Prime streamers to archive videos for 60 days.

Meanwhile, YouTube also offers live video and stores livestream videos indefinitely by converting them into regular videos.

In Vietnam, Facebook must also comply with a number of new regulations related to livestreaming on the platform. Specifically, according to Decree 147 on Management, Provision, and Use of the Internet and Online Information issued by the Government, effective from December 25, 2024, social network user accounts must be authenticated by phone number to be able to livestream or write comments.

In case social network service users use the livestream feature for commercial purposes, they must authenticate their account with a personal identification number.

Social networks will not be required to ask users to provide CCCD photos?
