President Macron warns Trump about Russia, Putin ally speaks out

French President Emmanuel Macron said on March 5 that he would discuss expanding Paris' nuclear deterrent to protect European partners and raised the idea of ​​sending troops to Ukraine to enforce a peace deal.

In a speech to the nation, President Macron said the French "have good reason to worry" about the beginning of a "new era" after US President Donald Trump began his second term in the White House. “I want to believe that the United States will always stand by us, but we must also be prepared in case that scenario does not happen,” Mr Macron added.

The US leader has repeatedly expressed his desire to quickly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict through direct negotiations with Moscow. However, in his new speech, Mr. Macron accused Russia of becoming a "threat to France and Europe" and warned Mr. Trump that "peace cannot be achieved at any price" and that there could be no "too fragile" ceasefire.

Ahead of a European Union (EU) summit on March 6 on European rearmament, President Macron said he would open a debate on extending the country's nuclear deterrent to other European countries, following a "historic" call from Friedrich Merz - who is likely to become the next German chancellor.

Mr Macron also reaffirmed that European military forces could be deployed to Ukraine after a peace deal is signed to ensure Moscow does not resume hostilities in Kyiv.

“They will not fight today, they will not fight on the front lines, but they will be there once the peace agreement is signed, to ensure its full implementation,” Mr Macron said.

Commenting on the above information, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, posted on the X platform on March 6: "Mr. Macron said that Russia has become a threat to France and Europe - now and for many years to come. However, he [Macron] himself is not a big threat. He will disappear forever after May 14, 2027. And no one will remember him."
