Vladimir Putin's inauguration as Russian President took place solemnly at the Grand Kremlin Palace on May 7, and following that, the entire Russian Government Cabinet resigned.

According to Russian law, within two weeks of his inauguration, the President must submit to the State Duma (lower house) a candidate for Prime Minister.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not specify a specific time frame in which Mr Putin might present a candidate for prime minister to the State Duma for consideration.

“He will make a nomination when he sees fit. It could be any day,” Peskov said in response to a Life reporter’s question about whether Putin would name a candidate for prime minister before the end of the week.

Russian law requires the President to submit a candidate for Prime Minister to the State Duma within two weeks of his inauguration. Lawmakers then have one week to consider the nomination. If the candidate is approved by lawmakers, the Head of State appoints the head of the Cabinet.

According to local media, Mikhail Mishustin, who recently resigned as Russian Prime Minister, is likely to be reappointed as he is widely seen as a successful government leader, based on the country's growing economy despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and subsequent economic sanctions from the West.

Mr Putin, who has just begun his fifth term as Russian President, will also directly appoint the country's foreign, defense, justice, emergencies and interior ministers in consultation with the Federation Council (upper house of parliament).

Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shoigu are expected to retain their posts as foreign minister and defense minister, respectively. Both are veteran Kremlin officials.

Also on May 7, the Russian President signed a decree instructing the government to continue working until the formation of a new Cabinet. The document was posted on the official legal information portal, the state news agency TASS reported.

“In connection with the resignation of the Government of the Russian Federation pursuant to Article 116 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, guided by Part 5 of Article 117 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, I order the Government of the Russian Federation to continue its work until the formation of a new government,” the Russian President's decree reads.

Accordingly, the former Prime Minister, his deputies and Ministers now work as acting members of the Cabinet.

Once a new government is formed, its head and members will provide signals about Russia's development path in the coming years.

One day after starting his fifth term, on May 8, President Putin signed a decree requiring the Russian Government to ensure the country's economic, social and technological development in seven key areas for the next 6-12 years, including demographics, science and technology, and GDP targets...

Notably, Mr. Putin wants Russia to have the fourth highest gross domestic product (GDP) in the world by 2030 in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). By then, the value of imported goods and services will account for about 17% of Russia's GDP.

The country's exports will shift away from energy products, with agriculture seen as an important driver of foreign trade in the future. Also according to the Kremlin leader's plan, in the next 6 years, Russia will be among the top 25 countries in terms of using robots in production .
