A US appeals court on December 27 revived a lawsuit accusing Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis of paying illegal commissions to doctors to encourage them to promote its multiple sclerosis treatment drug Gilenya.
In a 3-0 ruling, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, New York, said the plaintiff, Steven Camburn, a former Novartis sales representative, said Novartis paid doctors thousands of dollars and invited them to dinner at high-end restaurants to speak at academic events, but the payments were in fact commercial in nature.
Judge Myrna Perez agreed with seven other federal appeals courts in the Novartis cases, saying the drugmaker violated the federal anti-bribery law.
Novartis has not commented on the above information.
