Born into a family with special circumstances, Lam Van Dong (Yunnan, China) did not have money to go to extra classes. During high school, he went to school and worked part-time to help his parents.

There was a time when his father was seriously ill and medical expenses became a burden on the family. Dong thought about dropping out of school to work with his mother to earn money to take care of his father.

Being naturally intelligent and always diligent in studying, Dong was assessed by his teachers as having potential and that if he was given the opportunity to study, he could become a talented person. For that reason, his mother did not agree to let him drop out of school.

Loving his parents and the desire to escape poverty became the motivation for the young man to strive. As he got closer to the end of the year, Dong's achievements rose to the top of the class.

In addition to studying and reviewing for exams, Dong worked as a bricklayer and formworker at a construction site to earn money for his tuition. This job stayed with him for a long time, even during his university entrance exams.

In 2019, Van Dong suddenly became famous on Chinese social networks because of an interesting story related to his job of carrying bricks.

On the last day of the university entrance exam, Dong was the one who left the exam room very early. This surprised the reporters standing at the school gate, because the gaokao in China is a fierce exam, and every candidate wants to take advantage of all the time to do the test.

When reporters asked why he left the exam room early, Dong said the exam was easy and he had urgent business to attend to. Later, people discovered that the student had hurriedly finished the exam to get to the construction site on time.

Many people thought that Dong could not do the test and answered the easy questions just to tease the reporters. No one could have imagined that Dong scored 713/750 points, the highest score on the natural science test in Qujing City, Yunnan Province. It was not until the test scores were announced that many people realized that Dong's answer was true.

His excellent scores helped Dong win a ticket to China's top university, Tsinghua University. Before enrolling, Dong still took the time to carry bricks every day because he knew that studying in Beijing would cost a lot of money.

At Tsinghua, Dong always maintained his form and achieved good academic results. After 4 years of hard work, the young man from Yunnan graduated with honors.

Thanks to his impressive academic achievements, Van Dong received many job offers from large companies, some even offered to pay 1 million yuan/year (more than 3 billion VND), but he did not accept.

Dong surprised many people when he quit his job to register for the civil service exam in his hometown of Yunnan.

Responding to all questions, Van Dong said that although the salary is not high, working as a civil servant in his hometown is much more comfortable than working for a large company in a faraway land. Another reason Dong wants to return soon is to take care of his parents.
