Speaking at a press conference after the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, the head of the International Athletics Federation, Sebastian Coe, said the decision was "very important to protect the integrity of women's sport". According to Mr. Coe, the decision was made after extensive consultation on the proposal.
He expressed confidence in this policy, affirming: “We will firmly protect the women's category and we will do everything necessary to do that."
Mr Coe announced the policy a week after failing to win the IOC presidency, which was won by Kirsty Coventry, a former Olympic swimmer from Zimbabwe.
