Since the re-establishment of the province in 1989, with the attention and leadership of the Party Committee and authorities at all levels, the agricultural sector in Quang Tri has continuously strived to overcome all difficulties and challenges and achieved many remarkable results. Thereby, it has made an important contribution to promoting socio-economic development and building an increasingly developed homeland.

In addition, the regional financial and monetary crisis has also significantly affected the development of the locality in many aspects. To overcome the above difficulties and challenges, the agricultural sector of the province has focused on implementing the province's socio-economic development strategy with many positive and effective solutions in each stage, such as: innovating management mechanisms, liberating production capacity, expanding acreage, increasing the number of planting times, changing crop structure, boldly applying scientific and technological advances, etc.

Focus on comprehensive agricultural development towards clean and sustainable production, forming large, concentrated commodity production areas, ensuring raw materials for the processing industry. Thereby, increasing income for agricultural producers, especially the poor and near-poor in rural areas, people in remote areas.

Promote administrative reform, improve the business environment. Focus on developing agriculture towards commodity production, sustainability, efficiency, value chain linkage, increasing added value...

With the determination and solidarity of the entire industry and localities, agricultural production in Quang Tri province has achieved very important achievements. The agricultural and rural development sector has many positive and breakthrough changes towards increasing added value and sustainable development.

The form of production organization is constantly being renewed from small scale to the formation of concentrated production areas, commodities, linked production, application of new science and technology, high technology, clean agriculture in the direction of organic, environmentally friendly; many key products have been present in international markets. The average annual growth rate of the agriculture - forestry - fishery sector in the period of 1989-2024 reached 3.8%.

Up to now, not only has food security been ensured, but specialized areas have also been formed, focusing on commodity production associated with processing industry and value chain linkage; the quality and value of agricultural products have been constantly improved, shifting from quantity to quality, efficiency and sustainability. Food output has increased from 113,000 tons in 1989 to 311,000 tons in 2024, an increase of 198,000 tons. Up to now, the area of ​​high-quality rice is 41,000 hectares (not available in 1989), reaching 80% of the cultivated area. The area of ​​large-scale rice production is over 12,000 hectares, reaching 110% of the plan.

The area of ​​crops linked to and consuming products is over 8,100 hectares; the area of ​​drone application is over 10,000 hectares. The area of ​​crops produced according to standards is 1,928.74 hectares, of which the area produced according to organic standards, natural farming is 462.04 hectares; the area produced according to VietGap standards, food safety, organic orientation is 1,466.7 hectares. Many key crops and livestock have been formed according to value chains, promoting efficiency such as: coffee, organic rice, passion fruit, medicinal plants, organic pepper...

Livestock farming methods are developing towards industrial farms, applying high technology and biosafety. The province currently has 699 livestock and poultry farms (an increase of 2 farms compared to 2023). There are currently 135 high-tech livestock farms, linked with enterprises. The total output of fresh meat for slaughter in 2024 will reach 63,128 tons, 5.9 times higher than in 1989. Aquaculture and fishing activities have had positive changes. The province currently has 111 hectares of high-tech aquaculture. The total output of aquatic products will increase from 4,995.6 tons in 1989 to 38,043 tons in 2024; the farming area will increase from 41.5 hectares in 1989 to 3,162 hectares in 2024.

Forest protection and development management continues to receive attention and direction, mobilizing the entire political system and people to actively participate in forest protection and development management. The output of timber exploitation from planted forests has continuously increased from 18,000 m3 in 1989 to 1,164,000 m3 in 2024. Investment has been made to upgrade and build many large irrigation works and hundreds of other small irrigation works to ensure stable irrigation for about 54,000 ha/2 crops; prevent salinity, retain fresh water, prevent early floods, minor floods, prevent sand blowing, sand filling... The work of preventing and mitigating natural disasters and adapting to climate change has received attention and focused investment in key areas through many forms and scientific measures.

The quality of the collective economic sector and cooperatives is increasingly improved. To date, the province has 318 agricultural cooperatives and 2 agricultural cooperative unions operating under the Law on Cooperatives, an increase of 8 cooperatives compared to the beginning of 2024. The OCOP program has been directed to be effectively implemented. There are 172 OCOP products, including 2 5-star OCOP products, 33 4-star OCOP products, and 137 3-star OCOP products.

By the end of 2024, the whole province had 76/101 communes meeting new rural standards, of which 23 communes met advanced new rural standards, 5 communes met model new rural standards; 3/7 districts met new rural standards; 8 extremely disadvantaged villages and hamlets met new rural standards; 128 villages met model new rural standards; 186 household gardens were recognized as new rural model gardens.

Promoting the achieved results, on the basis of approved district and provincial planning, the provincial agriculture and environment sector continues to exploit potentials, advantages, market demand and adapt to climate change to invest in appropriate production.

Research, review, supplement, complete or issue new mechanisms and policies, remove bottlenecks, create new motivation for agricultural production development such as credit and land policies, support for deep processing, development of large timber forests, market development, product consumption, joint ventures and associations. Prioritize the allocation of resources to implement preferential policies to support, encourage, attract enterprises, private economic sectors to form joint ventures and associations, and build value chains in agricultural production.

Focus on investing in building infrastructure to serve agricultural restructuring. Continue to innovate and develop appropriate and effective forms of production organization. Build and replicate effective operating models of cooperatives, cooperative groups, and linkages in production, processing, and consumption of agricultural products, and promote cooperatives to participate in the OCOP program. Prioritize resources to support research and application of science and technology to create a strong driving force for agricultural development, towards ecological and circular agriculture, associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital transformation in agriculture.

Promote trade promotion activities to ensure the connection between production and consumption, apply e-commerce, and improve the ability to connect production and market. Restructure agricultural production in all fields and in each field.
