Earth Hour: Spreading the Green Shift message

Climate change, global warming and the risk of energy depletion are major challenges facing the world. This year's Earth Hour campaign with the message "Green transition - Green future" aims to call on people to save electricity, participate in sustainable energy production activities, increase the use of renewable energy sources, and use products and equipment with high energy efficiency.

Earth Hour is an annual international event initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since 2007, to call for energy saving, nature protection, sustainable development, and reduction of the impacts of climate change. This year, the event of turning off lights for 1 hour in response to Earth Hour will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.

According to Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha - Deputy Director of Phu Tho Power Company, the Company mobilizes organizations, agencies, and customers to turn off lights and unnecessary electrical equipment during the event to turn off lights in response to Earth Hour 2025. At the same time, the Company has directed its affiliated power companies to post propaganda content on electricity saving and environmental protection, responding to the Earth Hour Campaign through images, video clips, and text running on screens, on websites, social network fanpages, and at customer transaction locations and the headquarters of the Power Company.

In Phu Tho province, the response to the Earth Hour Campaign is integrated with the implementation of Directive No. 20/CT-TTg, dated June 8, 2023 of the Prime Minister on enhancing electricity saving in the period of 2023-2025 and the following years. The Electricity sector directly promotes, consults, supports and encourages customers to apply creative and highly effective solutions in safe, economical and efficient use of electricity. At the same time, work with all production customers (with consumption of 1 million kWh/year or more) to promote the electricity supply plan for the year; solutions for economical and efficient use of electricity and encourage customers to sign contract appendices/agreements to participate in electricity demand management programs of Vietnam Electricity Group.

Not only in the Earth Hour Campaign, the propaganda of electricity saving is regularly deployed by the Electricity sector and departments, branches, sectors and units in the province through many programs, communication activities, consulting, guiding businesses and people to use electricity economically, contributing to creating spread and consensus in the community. In 2024, the total electricity saving output of the whole province reached 106.45 million kWh, accounting for 2.56% of commercial electricity. During the Earth Hour Campaign in 2024, the capacity used in the province was reduced by about 7.1 MW, equivalent to a reduction in electricity of about 7,100 kWh.

Efforts in propaganda work have effectively mobilized individuals and organizations to participate in responding to Earth Hour, saving electricity, and have been known and actively supported by many businesses, households and people. Ms. Bui Thi Hoa - Owner of Hoa Duc Electronics Store (Dong Tien area, Dong Lac commune, Yen Lap district) said: "I find that the Earth Hour Campaign is very meaningful, helping businesses and customers pay more attention and be more aware of saving energy and protecting the environment. For many years, the store has always paid attention to saving electricity and advised customers to choose energy-saving products. To reduce electricity costs, the store designs open spaces, makes the most of natural light, and uses reasonable air conditioning. For customers, we advise them to choose equipment such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines... using inverter technology, along with products with energy labels certified by the Ministry of Industry and Trade".

Earth Hour is a meaningful activity, spreading the message of long-term responsibility in environmental protection, minimizing the impact of climate change, requiring the cooperation of the whole society from small but practical actions, contributing to building a green planet.
