According to The Japan Times , on March 5, more and more Japanese women have chosen to freeze their eggs with financial support for women in need from the Japanese government and businesses.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government had previously launched an egg freezing support program in 2023, but due to growing demand, it is planning to double its budget to support this method. The budget is expected to reach 1 billion yen by 2025.

Several other localities in Japan such as Yamanashi Prefecture, Ikeda City in Osaka Prefecture, Tokyo and Chiba are also expected to have financial support programs this year.

Egg freezing involves removing eggs from the ovaries and storing them at a hospital or specialized egg bank. Depending on the number of eggs, the egg retrieval and freezing process can cost between 500,000 and 600,000 yen ($3,500 to $4,000), with annual storage fees ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 yen.

“Freezing my eggs makes me feel more secure,” a 30-year-old employee at Panasonic Connect in Tokyo told The Japan Times .

She decided to freeze her eggs through the company's program, which covered up to 400,000 yen in initial costs.

Japanese trading house Itochu has also introduced a program to subsidize egg storage fees for employees working abroad. "We want to provide more options to allow employees working abroad to feel more secure," a company representative said.

In addition, the increased awareness of egg freezing in Japan is due to more and more celebrities sharing their experiences with this method.

But freezing eggs is not only expensive financially, it can also have physical effects. “There are many ways to have children, and egg freezing is just one of them,” said Yukiko Katagiri, a professor at Toho University.

“I hope women will carefully consider whether they really need this method after understanding its pros and cons,” Ms. Yukiko added.
