On July 25, Chairman of the Writers’ Association Nguyen Quang Thieu announced that writer Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong passed away on July 24, just a few days after his wife, poet Lam Thi My Da, passed away. He was 87 years old.

Writer Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong was born on September 9, 1937, in Hue city. His hometown is Bich Khe village, Trieu Long commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province.
After finishing high school in Hue, in 1960 he graduated from the first class of the Vietnamese-Chinese department of Saigon Pedagogical University. In 1964, Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Hue University of Literature. From 1960 to 1966 he taught at Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue.
In 1978, he was admitted to the Vietnam Writers Association. He was the General Secretary of the Binh Tri Thien-Hue Literature and Arts Association, Chairman of the Binh Tri Thien Literature and Arts Association, and Editor-in-Chief of Cua Viet magazine.
Writer Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong is the author of famous essay collections such as Many Fires (Vietnam Writers Association Award 1980-1981), Illusionary Mountain, Rose Wine Before Drinking, Already Drunk, Fragrant Grass Region (awarded by the National Committee of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations (1999, 2002, 2007).
His most famous work is Who Named the River, written in Hue in 1981, which was included in the general education literature program.
In 2007, he was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, together with his wife, poet Lam Thi My Da.
In a general assessment of Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong's literary career, the Grade 12 Literature book has a passage that reads: " Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong is one of the writers specializing in memoirs. The unique feature in his writing is the smooth combination of intellectual and lyrical qualities, between sharp argumentation and multi-dimensional thinking synthesized from a rich knowledge of philosophy, culture, history, geography... All are expressed through an introverted, concise, passionate and talented writing style."
Poet Ngo Minh commented that Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong is one of the very few famous memoir writers in our country in the past few decades: "Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong's memoirs attract readers with their profound humanity, profound intelligence and the mysterious and charming poetic quality of Hue. Those are talented, talented, and skillful writings... In fact, Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong's memoirs are prose poems that attract readers... Hoang Phu Ngoc Tuong's poetry is the beauty of nostalgic sadness, philosophical torments, from the depths of time, the depths of the land echoing in the hearts of readers".
