Former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan passed away at 7:05 a.m. on June 21 at the 108 Central Military Hospital, at the age of 86.

According to the Central Committee for the Protection and Care of Officials' Health, former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan passed away after a period of illness due to old age and poor health, "despite the dedicated treatment by the Party, the State, a group of professors and doctors, and the wholehearted care of his family."

The funeral, memorial service and burial of former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan will be announced later.

Mr. Vu Khoan is from Phu Xuyen district, Hanoi; Central Committee member from 7th to 9th terms; Secretary of the Party Central Committee, 9th term; National Assembly delegate, 11th and 12th terms.

In 1990, Mr. Vu Khoan was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. At the 7th National Party Congress (1991), he was elected to the Party Central Committee. In 1998, he was assigned as First Deputy Minister in charge of relations with countries in the Asia-Pacific region, relations with ASEAN, ASEM, APEC, research, economic cooperation, consular affairs, law, press, and training.

In 2000, Mr. Vu Khoan was awarded the title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary by the President. In January 2000, he was approved by the National Assembly to be appointed as Minister of Trade; in August 2002, he was approved by the National Assembly to be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Foreign Economic Relations.

In June 2006, the National Assembly approved his dismissal from the position of Deputy Prime Minister due to health reasons. In 2007, he retired in Hanoi.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan was awarded many noble titles by the Party and State such as the First Class Independence Medal, First Class Labor Medal, Second Class Resistance War Medal against America for National Salvation, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Title, and 60-year Party membership badge.

Mr. Vu Khoan was awarded by the Governments of many countries: Medal of Friendship of Peoples (former Soviet Union), Medal of Freedom, First Class (Laos), Medal of the Rising Sun (Japan).
