In Duc Chinh area, there are currently 12 establishments purchasing and processing fresh carrots. Among them, in addition to Duc Chinh Agricultural Service Cooperative, Ms. Phung Thi Hao's family establishment is always at the top in terms of the output of purchased and processed commercial carrots.

In 1992, Ms. Hao started a family with Mr. Tran Van Vu, a villager. The couple worked together to develop the economy. In 2002, her family rented 8,640 square meters of alluvial land in Minh Tan Commune (Nam Sach) to grow carrots, and was one of the pioneers in the movement of renting land to grow carrots from farmers in Duc Chinh Commune.

Learning from the facts, Ms. Hao soon realized that carrots have great potential for development thanks to the large consumption market. Currently, 70% of Hai Duong's carrots are grown for export, a small part is consumed in the province, the rest is the domestic market. The supply of carrots among the people in Hai Duong province in general, and Duc Chinh commune in particular, has great potential, while the consumption method is still small-scale, not paying attention to investing in preliminary processing to create clean products according to market requirements.

2007 was a big turning point when she and her husband decided to stop growing carrots and switch to purchasing and processing carrots. As a pioneer model in Duc Chinh, at first, her family only bought 3 pumps and hired 5-7 people to wash them manually. Production reality showed that manual washing was both laborious and low-yielding, so it could not guarantee the quantity of products to supply the market. Ms. Hao and her husband calculated, discussed and decided to invest in more systematic production. "In order for the products to meet the increasingly expanding market demand and at the same time improve the quality of the finished products, the support of machinery is needed," Ms. Hao shared.

Thinking goes hand in hand with doing, Ms. Hao's family borrowed money from the bank, and with the support of relatives and friends, she and her husband invested over 10 billion VND to rent land, build a 572 m2 processing factory, with 8 carrot processing lines, 3 cold storages with a capacity of 600 tons of fresh frozen carrots.

To be proactive in production, in addition to purchasing through agents, Ms. Hao also bought 2 trucks to go to the fields to buy fresh carrots for preliminary processing, and 3 forklifts to pack them into containers. At first, the products only met the consumption requirements of the domestic market, but gradually her family's facility participated in exporting. Up to now, Ms. Hao and her husband have directly signed many export orders to Korea, Malaysia, Dubai, etc.

To increase the value and expand the export market of fresh carrots to demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, Dubai, etc., Ms. Hao's family's purchasing and processing agents always closely coordinate with the growing areas to comply with the plant quarantine regulations of importing countries. All raw material purchase contracts confirm the origin of carrots for export by location and identify responsibilities related to traceability. "That is the core to shape the way of producing goods, especially for export," Ms. Hao said.

Ms. Hao always actively participates in training courses, technology transfer; strives to find markets for goods; closely follows trade information channels. She regularly attends conferences connecting consumption of carrots and agricultural products of Hai Duong province; contacts with domestic and foreign enterprises; participates in agricultural consumption fairs...

According to Ms. Hao, through a number of online bridges, representatives of the Vietnam Trade Office in India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore, Australia, Russia, etc. shared a lot of information about the market, consumer habits, standards, conditions on goods, trade barriers, techniques, etc. of the host country. From there, practical recommendations were made for establishments like her family to produce and supply quality agricultural products, meeting the import requirements of specific markets.

Currently, Ms. Hao's family purchases an average of over 10,000 tons of carrots per year. Her family's total annual revenue is about 50 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 2 billion VND. Ms. Hao's family's facility creates regular, stable jobs for 10-15 workers and 40-50 seasonal workers, with an average income of over 10 million VND/person/month.

“Economic models like Ms. Hao’s family are an important basis for shaping the planting, processing and consumption of carrots in the area towards commodity production. Carrots really bring high economic value to farmers, so the lives of people in the commune have improved a lot,” Mr. Tran Van Tuong, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Duc Chinh commune affirmed.

With outstanding production and business results, Ms. Hao's family has continuously achieved the title of "Excellent Farmer and Business Household" at the provincial level for 17 consecutive years from 2007 to 2023.
